Max H. Baber a German immigrant employed at the Comas Cigarette Machine Company in Salem is jailed in Roanoke Va on a sedition charge. He allegedly made treasonable comments about the United States refused to fund a service flag fund and insulted men under the draft calling the flag a dirty rag and denouncing the U S as contemptible. Threats of lynching followed.
The Anchor line steamship Elysia of 6 937 tons gross was sunk by a German submarine on May 23 in the Mediterranean while carrying cargo from the Far East. One of the crew was reported missing as rescuers arrived.
Albert Sanders was hanged at 5 14 Friday morning in Mobile county jail for his role in the murder of Mrs Julia Mayness last May. Fisher Brooks was executed earlier on the same gallows. Sanders proclaimed his innocence, thanked sheriffs and officers, and listened as pastors prayed and sang with him, though he remained largely indifferent. Continued on page eight.
Everette Ellis, arraigned on vagrancy charges in police court, received a continuance until August 15. His draft classification card shows Class 1A, and Ellis plans induction soon. the delay was granted at his attorney's request with police and solicitor consent.

R H Ruskin of Pensacola was arrested on a general charge and held for federal authorities after failing to produce a draft registration card. In recorder L H Edington court, Ruskin said he was registered and classified 4f as unfit for military duty, but could not present the card as it remained in Pensacola. The Hirt case was postponed until Monday.
T. A. Doody, chairman, was docketed at police headquarters Friday morning on a charge of violating city milk bylaw. The complaint was filed by Meat and Milk Inspector P. Woolf.
Washington reports no official statement on the exact actions of American troops in a major offensive but notes three newly formed army corps likely involved. More than forty Fort Morgan soldiers arrive in Mobile aboard the Holabird to perform in the Battle House minstrel show. Proceeds fund a YMCA hut at Fort James. a parade and packed crowd are expected as the post band, quartette, banjo and guitar acts, and novelty songs take the stage before a dance and dining for the troops.
