American forces countered a German assault west of Chateau Thierry and near Vaux driving off the attack and gaining a few hundred yards in places. Heavy bombardment, gas use, and naval shells from Meaux marked the battle as U S troops held their positions amid continued fighting along the Marne front.
Allied reports describe a grand German offensive advancing 66 miles from Chateau Thierry to Massiges. Troops pushed with heavy artillery and naval guns, aiming along a Marne line toward Rheims. Special trains bring 10000 Minnesota drafted men and 4960 from South Carolina to Camp Wadsworth for national army duty. About 6000 more from Pennsylvania arrive this month and August will add another 10000 soldiers from undisclosed states. Officials project Wadsworth to be the largest U S military camp.
Investigations into a wholesale arrest of suspected Slackers by military police led to several men being classified Class A. Assistant District Attorney Harry Vegues said most had registered but moved around, failing to update their registration or receive summons for physical examinations. Six men were kept, others released after brief board reviews. Hans Larsen among the six was examined today.
