Three men in an old touring car robbed Vaughan and Miss Loyd on the bay front road south oflington just before midnight. They seized money watches and car keys and fled. Vaughan and Loyd walked to town as police search citywide for the vehicle.
Two men, Paul Kopp and Carl Berger, bachelors who shared a Foley farm home on Perdido Beach road, reportedly argued over this year’s profits. Kopp was shot and killed by Berger with a shotgun. Berger was arrested at Alberta and jailed in Bay Minette.
Washington July 8 The Postmaster General received a telegram from Henry L Doherty urging that the Kansas City Star be barred from the mails over a campaign for lower gas rates The matter was referred to the department solicitor for possible investigation and action Brown did not make the complaint public
Routine business occupied the city commission meeting with Mayor Schwarz and Commissioner Hartwell present. Commissioner Bates was at the capital on municipal legislation in progress.
The forecast notes partly cloudy unsettled conditions for Wednesday night and Thursday across regions including Alabama. River forecast suggests minor changes to river and branches with temperatures rising slightly. Meteorologist indicates upcoming unsettled trend with limited changes to water levels.
Herbert Hayes arrested at Arlington docks by prohibition agents in a fast motor boat for carrying a pistol and illegal liquor was fined 500 dollars plus costs or 140 days hard labor after pleading guilty before Judge Touart. Other prosecutions for prohibition violations and reckless driving arrests were noted.
New York state recorded 698 homicides in 1930 with New York City contributing 494. Both totals surpassed all previous records.
Jack Shipp of Anniston, Alabama posted a 75 to lead the Mobile Country Club course in the Alabama amateur golf tournament qualifiers. Walter Shearer of Mobile trailed by six strokes, with a field of over sixty golfers and several former champions in the mix. Other qualifiers included H. M. Wall, Gilbert Lopes, and Warren Smith Jr, among Mobile and nearby entrants.
Joseph C. Swan Jr navigation inspector for the Mobile district leaves Mobile on Wednesday to Biloxi. He will supervise the launches and excursion boats during the upcoming annual regatta and will be away for several days.
A favorable report on the Sossaman bill requires Mobile’s share of hospital maintenance. The measure, approved by the senate local legislation committee, would mandate half the hospital costs be paid when accounts are submitted to the county board. Cecil Bates urged quick action as Mobile’s delegation backs the bill.
UTE Kans July 8. The city commissioners announced there will be no city taxes for the second successive year. Municipal expenses are paid from the profits of the gas water and electric plants owned and operated by the city.
William Dugan of New Jersey was believed dead after nine hours of revival efforts following a five minute drowning at Laurel lake. He regained consciousness, recalling a sense of resting then hearing his mother call and summoning the will to wake.
C A Gullahorn prominent lumberman of Thomasville Alabama died Sunday after a brief heart illness. He retired at his regular time and was stricken after midnight passing away before aid could arrive. Funeral services were held at his home Monday with Rev W B McCreary officiating. Interment followed at Clinton Alabama. He is survived by his wife his mother a sister Mrs Olive Shantz of Jackson a sister in Philadelphia and a sister in New York City.
Chief Warden F L Erwin disclosed a failed escape by forty prisoners at Birmingham's Jefferson County Jail. Three bar sets were cut free before discovery, and tools including saws knives files keys and an electric torch were found in Arthur Burnap's cell. Burnap admitted directing the bid for freedom.
Washington July 8 Hoover administration views the one year war debt moratorium as a leverage point toward an advance in world disarmament. The president hopes the general disarmament conference will deliver notable results.
Carl Witzell of Eight Mile Station on St Stephens road suffered a broken right wrist and facial and body injuries after a Tuesday night collision on St Stephens highway. Archie Shaffer of Whistler, turning into his driveway, collided with Witzell's northbound car. Both vehicles were badly damaged and Witzell received medical treatment before returning home.
In Vera Cruz two primary students were expelled for interrupting an anti Catholic lecture. The session, led by the school principal under state orders, promoted a campaign backing a new law restricting church activities in schools.
Seattle reports Postal Telegraph plans a Fort Worth aircraft flying Seattle to Tokyo. sighted at North Bend British Columbia at 6 13 a m PDT and Lytton B C at 6 30 a m. The racers aim for a 5100 mile nonstop leg over Alaska to win a 25000 prize from Asahi newspaper.
Four persons died after drinking denatured alcohol in Brockton Massachusetts with a fifth dying soon and two more in serious condition. Victims include John Blake George Jacobs Annie Jacobs Lloyd Dean and Edward Jacobs. Dominic Desormier faces manslaughter charge as autopsies are ordered.
Treasury receipts for July 6 totaled 6 811 578 04 dollars while expenditures reached 24 004 515 16 dollars leaving a balance of 420 855 034 58 dollars. Customs receipts for the month ending July 6 stood at 4 751 258 47 dollars.
New Orleans reports cotton prices fell about one dollar per bale after government acreage estimates show 41,491,000 acres in cultivation, ten percent below last year. Oct futures slipped to 9.89 and 10.11 for December. Washington confirms the acreage drop and notes last year’s production at 13,932,000 bales with no current projection yet.
Dr. D. P. Slaughter, pastor of St. Francis Street Methodist church, assists in a revival at Moundville. Rev. W. S. Baker of Montgomery, executive secretary of the Alabama conference board of education, will preach at St. Francis Street church on Sunday.
In Montgomery the Alabama Senate tabled a House bill raising the state gasoline tax from four to six cents after an amendment cutting the rise to one cent passed. Lieutenant Governor Merrill cast the deciding vote to table the measure, ending the effort on the forty fifth day of the session. Two $25 million road bond amendments remain pending.
Expedition crews scale inland from the west coast in a 1,000 mile journey. They use skis and sleds for provisions and are supported by the Norwegian government. They search for the expedition connected to Alfred Wegener whose body was found recently.
In Havana on July 6 political prisoners freed by the audiencia court left Cabana fortress but were rearrested within blocks of the prison. Among them was national poet Agustin Acosta. The releases had followed a police move to thwart a forcible overthrow of the dado administration.
Thieves forced open a lock at a gasoline pump at the Big and station on Catherine Street near Old Shell and stole a large quantity of fuel. Police were notified of the incident.
The first two cutters of the St Petersburg base arrived here for repairs at the Alat Drydocks and Shipbuilding Company. They left here late Tuesday for their base. Four other cutters remain in Mobile for repairs at the local plant.
Police request from H. A. Bishop of 104 North Street to help locate a missing boy. The notice seeks public cooperation in locating the child and providing information to authorities.
