Washington reports a major Luftwaffe raid on London with a score of German planes bombarding the city from the air. Cables describe it as one of the greatest over the metropolis, causing unknown casualties. Three German aircraft were later reported down at sea.
About twenty hostile aircraft bombarded London at 9 30 this morning in a major raid. Anti aircraft guns and British planes fought back while thousands crowded streets and windows watched the attack. The official British account says several German bombers were brought down at sea and damage occurred in central London.
The latest major London air raid occurred on June 13 when a German squadron of about 15 aircraft targeted the downtown area. Bombs fell in the east and casualties were reported, with naval and other facilities sustaining damage while only one German plane is listed as lost.
Local spot middling cotton rose 100 points to 25.38 with no sales as of noon after closing Friday at 24.89. The market moved in sympathy with other centers and remained nominal in tone.
A Vienna dispatch reports German Emperor and Empress arriving in the Austrian capital Friday morning. They were greeted at the station by Emperor Charles and Empress Zita, signaling a high profile royal reception.

Russian forces launch heavy fighting west of Pinsk as flames engulf the city. They report capture of Sianka forest and Hill 388 and penetration into Goov village. Advance continues in Galicia with first line trenches taken and second line positions seized. Artillery is leveling obstacles.
The report describes a second Russian attack near Pinsk, targeting a miles northern sector and following a previous slaugh t that yielded about 18 000 captives in two days. Pinsk lies on the Russo Galician front amid heavy fighting after Austro German drives in 1915.
Berlin reports repulse of Russian attacks near Koniuchy and in eastern Galicia with heavy losses. Russian assaults in the Carpathians also were repulsed according to the war office.
London reports a slight British line advance east of Wytschaete after repelling a trench raid near Acheville. No other major events reported. Paris says heavy artillery fought last night on the Aisne front near La Royere Pantheon and in Champagne south of Moronvilliers.
Two baseball games are set tomorrow at Monroe Park to raise funds for the Red Cross. The 2 p.m. opener features Crown Theatre’s picked Mobile and Ohio League team, followed by a game against the Police Relief Association team, Buyote of the Mobile and Ohio League.

Delinquent states will likely postpone first drawings to midweek. The plan centers on card numbering with selections drawn in Washington. Each drawn number drafts about 30,000 men, one from each exemption district.

Washington July 7 the senate reconsidered Senator Cummunal amendment and voted 43 to 39 to eliminate the provision prohibiting withdrawal of distilled beverages now in bond the reversal followed yesterday’s action in the chamber.
The Senate, by 44 to 39, moved to reconsider adding Cummins amendment prohibiting withdrawal of distilled liquors from bonded warehouses to the food control bill. Reed’s amendment to empower withdrawal for public interest was defeated 45 to 38, and Smoot’s proviso to seize bonded liquor with cost plus 10 percent profit passed 65 to 12 for consideration.
Alexander H. Ussery aged 47 died suddenly at 3 a.m. at 414 North Conception street. He was injured in the January 10 1913 explosion of the steamer James W. Staples on the Tombigbee river and never fully recovered. He left an adopted sister Blanche Bethea two aunts Mrs Martha Bethea and Mrs H L McKean plus other relatives.
Inclement weather last night caused the Board of School Commissioners to postpone the meeting planned to discuss a campaign for a 2 mill school tax. The session was rescheduled for the first part of next week with time and place to be announced.
