Collector Percy W. Gage reports 1916 exports rose by 9 309 950 to 30 637 633 while imports increased by 555 089 to 3 997 317. Monthly breakdown shows December exports leading with 2 809 659 and January 2 332 117. imports peak at 649 327 in March and 561 338 in April.
United States secret service agents raided a downtown rooming house in Atlanta and seized a printing press and a suitcase full of dies. They arrested Mrs Priola Tyler, a 2 woman, in connection with an alleged counterfeit operation linked to the earlier arrest of C W Garr, a local taxi driver. Garr said designs came from a man and a wife named Heighman or Highman, intended for a face powder box.
Engravers reported a young woman brought in the initial designs. Mrs Tyler identified by W H and Norman Wrighley of the engraving firm after a raid. Mrs Jer denies knowledge of the plot and says the press belongs to the Heighmans who stayed at the rooming house. She claims the Heighmans planned a powder named five five. Garr is held on a $1000 bond for the federal grand jury.
The United States Coast Guard reported Tallapoosa rushed from harbor to aid an unknown vessel aground in the gulf between Pensacola and Mobile. The date and return time remain uncertain as Tallapoosa completed port call Tuesday afternoon after a cruise, according to maritime circles.
German forces hold tenaciously to trenches near Verdun after yesterday gains and new French attacks failed with heavy losses. Paris reports limited French fire while Russians redeploy to Riga and Germans press northward. a Romanian official states victory in the Kasino valley on the Moldovan frontier.
Commissioner Pat J Lyons said he does not seek to impede port improvements in Mobile and voted against a 37000 appropriation for the Nesbitt plan. He claimed no alternative proposal was in view but favored improving facilities and noted Nesbitt's plan aligns with Magnolia Compress Company interests.
A city official says he was asked to approve a $37,000 proposition after seeing only photographs from Mr. Nesbitt and had no access to the telephor system to verify its operations. He denies transacting city business without firsthand information.
The commissioner objects to the system as a valuable franchise and argues Magnolia Compress should pay a franchise tax. Nesbitt is in Birmingham. no company rep could comment on Lyons' statement.
A major blaze in Pittsburgh damaged Frank & Sedar department store and Grand Opera House along with Hilton Clothing and several smaller firms. Four firemen were seriously hurt and many more injured as crews fought freezing conditions to halt the flames. The fire began at J G McCrory Co. and swept along Fifth Avenue toward Wood Street, threatening landmarks including the Newell Hotel and the Fark Building.
Idaho Senator Borah told the Michigan Society of Washington that all alliances to enforce world peace would force the United States into conflicts with Washington and Monroe policies. He warned a world police force could wield power over immigration and citizenship and then attack the U.S. He denounced the league as vicious and indefensible.
1,013 residents had paid their poll tax by 2 PM according to Tax Collector P B Dorlon. More payments today than any prior day. over 150 had paid by Saturday. Dorlon predicts peak effort Monday through Thursday as the campaign continues.

Weather Bureau predicts probable rain tonight and Sunday with mild temperatures. An area from the north Pacific coast to the lower Mississippi valley brings precipitation to the northwest and southerly winds and rising temperatures into the Gulf region and Mississippi valley.
A daring assault targeted a car in the Louisville and Nashville yards in Mobile. Two suspects were arrested as part of a wave of robberies. Allen Powell, a L and N car inspector, was beaten and robbed of 23 dollars at 6 50 in the Mary land Street yards. Powell identified his attacker and police and sheriff searched the area.
The American schooner Van Allens Boughton, a five master bound for Mobile from Las Palmas, was reported at Fort Morgan for repairs on local dry docks. Displacement listed at 1 909 tons net, captained by Chase. extent of damage and repair cost are not yet known.
In a close series last night at the Y M C A basketball court team No 1 led by Thomas Wakeford defeated team No 2 Cunningham 4 games to 3 in a business men's gym class match. A second series is set for next Friday night with the same teams.

Sheriff W. H. Holcombe reported a fire destroyed a church used by a Black congregation in Allenville and three other houses were burned. The cause is undetermined and an investigation is underway.
Five miles south of Ruby Arizona 40 members of Troop E First Utah Cavalry under Lt Arns exchange fire with Mexican soldiers across the line reinforcements from Nogales rush to the area and reports say several Mexicans fell during the clash. Americans see no casualties so far. The incident began when six U S cowboys tried to roundup cattle on the American side prompting Mexican fire from Sasabe garrison strengthened by Utah troops.
Reports from Columbres New Mexico indicate American troops began moving north from the field headquarters at Colonia Dublan at dawn. The advance guard accompanied by units arriving overland is believed to be part of the punitive expedition pursuing Villa followers moving in the wake of the expedition.
Washington January 27 The congress of constructive patriotism of the National Security League discussed economic preparedness for national crisis. A platform was prepared to educate for national spirit universal training and military naval activity. Representative Gardner of Massachusetts warned against international peace agreements drawing the U S into European or Asian wars.
Samuel Tapia, sought as a U. S. Army deserter, was arrested in El Paso Texas by Detective Warren Burch and Officers McManus and Connick. The arrest followed an active desertion warrant.
Banks report a large rise in Christmas club deposits for 1917 with Officers noting sharp gains. Merchants Bank President E F Ladd cites a 200 percent increase from last year while First National Bank lists 7 600 club members and plans $200 000 in December checks. Bank of Mobile opens 6 352 accounts marking a feature of this savings plan.
A fair at Temple Ahavas Chesed at Conti and Warren streets will raise funds for distressed Jews in Russia and Poland. The Mobile Jewish Relief Committee urges attendance or donations, after receiving telegrams about widespread Jewish suffering in Russia and Poland.
Frank Guesnard Dennis McClen non Light Smith Henry Henderson and James Warren on the charge of violating the prohibition law were each fined 50 dollars and costs of twenty days hard labor by Judge Chamberlain in the inferior criminal court today. Other cases on the docket disposed of were as follows Albert Williams Bullie Jackson gaming alias writ Richard Gatewood Henry Plump Jim Dickens Tom Reed H Rice Willie Williams Charley Jackson and John Fleming 1 dollar or ten days Ellis McInnis vagrancy 25 or twenty days.
Daniel James Long Jr of Mobile was listed among twelve successful applicants for medical licenses announced by the health board in Montgomery on January 27.
Sheriff W H Holcombe will dispatch an officer to New Orleans tomorrow to return with Earnie Howard alias Joseph Youngblood wanted on forgery charges. A warrant cites Howard forging Dr E A Peterson's name on a $9.75 check dated January 22. Howard agreed to return without a requisition.
A December 30 letter from a German soldier reports the Dresden arsenal explosion killed about 1,000 women and young girls within a twelve mile radius. The writer says authorities kept the news secret and no Dresden railroad tickets were issued except for urgent reasons.
Berian January 27. Russian forces attack Riga area headquarters as French renew assault on Verdun near Hill 304 early today. The Verdun attack failed with heavy losses reported by the war office.
Romanian forces report substantial progress in Moldavia during January 12 to 26. On the western frontier up to the Oitus valley only infantry patrols were present, while in the Kasino wall area Romanian troops attacked the enemy despite severe cold and heavy snow.
Chicago police hunted in the negro quarters for Marjorie Delbridge a 14 year old white girl and Camilla Jackson the nursemaid who took the child from Mrs Louis Brock where she had been placed by juvenile court. The girl had been in custody conflicts as welfare inspectors urged a white home. The hearing showed the mother an actress gave the girl to be raised by the negro caretaker who had cared for her fourteen years.
An illustrated Mooseheart presentation by Dr T W Dee of Houston Texas highlighted the meeting of the Loyal Order of Moose lodge near Chicago. Dee urged active membership and the supreme officer instructed members in the lodge secret work.
