A 10 000 ton all steel steamer the Bessemer City slid into the water at three minutes past noon witnessed by a large delegation from Bessemer led by Mayor Jones. Mrs Lee Moody christened the ship naming it Bessemer City as part of the American merchant marine. Several other Chickasaw ships are under construction with keel laying for Knoxville City and Chattanooga City planned after this launch.

The British submarine K-5, commanded by John Gaines, was lost with all hands near the English Channel approaches about 100 miles from Land's End.
