Sheriff reports 16 Roane county jail inmates escaped by jamming the cell door lock and walking out as officers slept. Three were captured later. Among the fugitives is Abe Lawson sought in the axe murder of Mrs Christmas and a 15 year old youth charged with killing a girl.
The state highway commission denies charges of illegal contract awards in a Tallapoosa and Lee counties suit. Attorney General McCall and Lawrence H. Lee filed the response in Montgomery, with a hearing set for January 20 after the Graves administration ends.
The Interstate Commerce Commission approves Frederick E. Williamson and Conrad E. Spens, Burlington officials, for the Gulf Mobile & Northern Railroad board. The move fuels Wall Street rumors of Burlington stock acquisition and possible lease plans to gain Gulf outlets at Mobile and New Orleans. Burlington officials then toured the Gulf Mobile & Northern properties in Mobile.
A car stolen January 3 from Gayle Motor Company Mobile was recovered in Des Moines Iowa by city police. Dean Jones is in custody there on motor vehicle theft act charges and the car will be returned to Mobile with Jones to be tried in Des Moines.
Gulfport Mississippi January 17 report says Stone County Sulphur company drill near McHenry fifty miles north struck a narrow inflammable substance at five hundred feet depth thought to be pure sulphur.
Minority Leader Garner introduced a resolution to allow Speaker Longworth to appoint new House conferees on Muscle Shoals. The push follows a deadlock between House and Senate members on wartime nitrate project operations. The current panel includes Ransley, Reece, and Wurzbach, with Quin and Fisher. The impasse has persisted since last spring.
In New Orleans on January 17 a planned jail riot ended without bloodshed when a police squad dispersed eight defiant prisoners in the jail yard. Two killers and two robbers escaped earlier after the disturbance.

Burglars forced a rear door glass panel to enter Brown and White drug store in Crichton early Saturday and took a small amount of cash cigarettes and candy. They removed a gum vending machine and stole $3 in pennies leaving 80 pennies on the floor. Fingerprints were collected by the city expert.
Arch Coleman, first assistant postmaster general, views a large photograph of the Mobile post office in his Washington office. R. 8. Cartledge, local postmaster, says Coleman prompted him to notice the image and asked if he recognized it. Cartledge confirms the photo depicts the Mobile post office as the best looking building he knows.

The Staple Cotton Discount Corporation through the Federal Farm Board announced an $8 million credit for Delta farms in Greenwood Mississippi. The loan targets established farmers who agree to plant no more than 65 percent of their land in cotton in 1931 and to keep ample feed crop acreage. The credit will be secured by second mortgages under defined conditions and follows a $1 million Farm Board loan to the Discount Corporation.
Police say two of four escapees from a New Orleans parish prison were captured in Mobile after a Friday night arrest. General charges were lodged against the men as authorities pursued remaining fugitives.
C W Taylor living at 1000 New Jersey street was docketed at police headquarters Saturday on a charge of violating city ordinance by selling uninspected meat. The arrest followed a complaint from H A Miller meat and milk inspector for the board of health.
Assistant chief Kelly Franklin of Paducah Kentucky arrived in Mobile with a warrant to return Robert L Holland 38 to Kentucky to face bank robbery charges The indictment alleges he stole 26166 05 from Peoples National Bank of Paducah on New Year s Eve The warrant is signed by W A Middleton McCracken County judge Holland was arrested earlier in the Manhattan hotel room under the alias James B Bedford
Authorities announced that exposure was blamed after the death of 20 year old Jesse Williams whose body was found on the floor of a room in a house at Northwest Conception and Savanegah streets. A five person group was one questioned under a general charge.
Chester Bassett of 1363 arraigned in recorder's court on an unlawful act and required to post 300 bond for next term. James Moore of Mira Street, a Black man, arrested for violation of the prohibition law, fined 100 dollars and costs 90. Detectives Green Holmes Bernstein Julia Noyed and James Gilbert cited. others similarly fined or sentenced to 60 days.
Roy Buckalew is found not guilty on charges of passing a forged Lumber Company check. Court records show Buckalew, tied to Holland alias J B Bedford, was arrested in Paducah Kentucky for manner. James T McGuire alias I Guire waived grand jury, served with forgery warrant after transfer to county jail. Tach as complainant, total recovered amount reported as 60 dollars.
Frank Young admitted guilt Saturday in federal court for violating the law and received a ten day jail term. He also faced a state sentence for the same offense, with a separate term to be served.
