The Weather Bureau urged pre cautions as a cold wave pushed south with 22 degree readings and potential 10 degree lows. Strong northerly winds forecast to end the week with freezing temperatures and warnings to protect water pipes and small craft along the coast.
A bookmobile displaying books and library equipment arrived Thursday in front of Mobile Public Library on Government Street. Led by Thomas J. McLaughlin of New York, the unit will tour the country for three years, visiting cities and rural counties to promote library access and regular visits by trucks with books.
The Southern Railway has proposed a rate change for cotton yard shipments from Florence to Mobile for Pacific coast service. The current rate is 64 cents. The proposal was received by the chamber of commerce and is now under traffic committee review.
The manufacturers' committee of the Mobile Chamber will convene Friday afternoon at 3:30. F E Haas serves as committee chairman. Members were notified of the session details and agenda.

Mobile city attorney Vincent Kilborn is urged by state Sen John Craft to run for lieutenant governor. Kilborn says he has not decided and that the decision would depend on friends and support. Craft notes Kilborn is Alabama native and not tied to any interest group.
The Rotary Club heard H. H. Wefel present a plan requiring Alabama Power to share earnings with Mobile city treasuries and to appraise the company property by a trio of appraisers. The resolution urged public funds sharing above a baseline while forbidding a city power plant or new franchise as long as the agreement remains in effect. The idea, tied to a joint appraisal and shared costs, was referred to the club's resolution committee. The public affairs committee had earlier been tasked with studying a municipal power plant for Mobile.
Willie Murphy operator of a Plateau store was arraigned in inferior criminal court for keeping open on Sunday and fined 10 dollars plus costs or 10 days. L Kentz faced a similar charge, lacking evidence, while C C Havard’s case was postponed to January 22. Arthur S Moore was fined 50 dollars and costs or 20 days for violating the prohibition law. Tra Crabtree and Saye Ateekee were each fined one dollar and costs or 10 days for traffic violations.
Detectives answered a Thursday morning call to the residence of R. A. Parsons at 1854 Old Shell Road. Police found evidence suggesting an attempt to enter the home and steal money.
In New Bedford Massachusetts on January 16 police broke up a National Textile Workers Union protest against the arrest of five members. About 1000 people gathered and 16 men and two women were arrested as the demonstration was thwarted.
An automobile stolen from Earl D. McLean at 14 North Joachim street was found Thursday at the state docks by Detectives Holmes and Green and returned to the owner. The theft occurred Wednesday morning from Conti and Joachim streets.
Dr. Glenn Andrews reports faults at Andrews Ak jail and county farm. Inspectors cite poor stockade conditions, old heating and bed covers, and meals served to deputies in the jail dining room. They urge better prison records, separate feeding, and safer prison practices.
Frank Powell, a Black man, was found on Congress street and Washington avenue with a deep head wound and taken to City hospital in critical condition. Police arrested Fannie Jones, a Black woman, on Walnut Street on related charges and she was ordered held without bond. Her case was set for Friday after arraignment in recorder's court.
Aosta police report a man arrested in connection with an assassination attempt related to Crown Prince Humbert. The suspect claimed ties to Ferrando Di Rosa and said a workman heard him plot to see who would go tassels to carry out the act.
Senate defeats proposals for a higher sugar tariff by ten votes. Senator Harrison's amendment to keep the Cuban sugar rate at 1.96 cents per pound passed 48 to 38, with Republican defections from the finance committee. House action followed, blocking most rates except agricultural duties, amid jockeying by Western bloc leaders and key votes from Nye Fraser Howell and Norris.
Trial against Theodore Negro for the Jones family killings on Christmas Eve hinges on insanity plea. The defense expects to present testimony starting tomorrow after the confession of the house servant. The victims include Dr. B. J. Jones, Mrs. Jones, and their 14 year old nephew George.
