John R. Foater narrowly escaped death when an intruder attacked with an iron bar at his 1408 Davis avenue shop around 8:30 last night. Foater fled to the front, a rear door allowed the suspect to escape. Police and deputies strive to locate the assailant, with Foater giving a detailed description.
Four bids were filed for the Mobile Shipbuilding Company materials in federal court. Bidders included Smith and Jaffe, Harry W. Fitzpatrick and U.S. Till of New Orleans, Benjamin B. Powell of Mobile, and the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company. Rosson will report at 4 p.m. on whether to award based on cash or commission terms.
Washington January 16 The second anniversary of prohibition finds President Harding and other high administration members worried by widespread violations across the nation. An exhaustive investigation is planned to uncover why public sentiment allows such flagrant breaches of the dry law. The president views prohibition as the law of the land deserving full citizen regard.
Charles Diggs, a Negro, faced two burglary charges in the return court today. Henry Lewes, grocer at Dearborn and New Jersey streets, reported theft of groceries and goods used by a burglars wagon. The case was continued to January 21 as witnesses were ordered to appear before the grand jury. Police officers Davis, Hubbard and Qualls testified to the stolen items including tobacco groceries candy vegetables cakes shoes and other articles.
W E Harris a 47 year old carpenter from Prichard is jailed on a charge of aiding his 17 year old son Elmer in an attempted jail escape. Deputies Bernstein and Gibson found three steel bars in the upper corridor of the white bull ring where Elmer Harris housed. The elder Harris, on special privileges due to his son being jailed, allegedly blocked a corridor door latch and watched the bars. Grand jury to hear evidence today.
The Interstate Commerce Commission orders Galveston Commercial Association to intervene in the Mississippi Warrior system versus railroads case. Galveston will oppose rail and water rates from points west of New Orleans, arguing rates favour New Orleans and disadvantage Texas ports on Texas Oklahoma and Louisiana freight.
The American Railway Express accepted a compromise in a Mobile Traffic Bureau case requiring rate reductions for lime shipments from Mobile. The agreed publish rate applies from Mobile to Alabama cities, offering a reduction of 21 to 25 cents per hundred pounds.
The grand jury of the January term opened its second week with plans to seek adjournment before Saturday. Jurors have already heard over 300 witnesses and about eighty-five cases. committees will visit city schools, county poorhouses, courthouse, and jail.
The ten day registration period for Mobile County opened at 9 o clock this morning at the county courthouse. The board of registrars reported a busy day registering new voters with books to be kept open daily through January 26 inclusive. Many women registered who had not voted last year, and registrars predicted a large increase in registrations during the period.
Jackson police hold Jack Jernigan on an assault claim from October 21, 1921. Jack Barnes, negro car superintendent for Pollack Shows, identified Jernigan as the shooter after being attacked aboard a Pollack Shows special train near Jackson. Barnes was wounded in the head, hand, and hip during the incident. Detectives Deputy Adams and Mike Desmond took Jernigan into custody.
A malarial control conference is set for 6 o'clock this afternoon at city hall to decide funding for recommended measures. The city plans a $20,000 appropriation to destroy breeding places of mosquitoes, while the county board was not ready to commit $10,000. State and federal authorities will provide the remaining $5,000.
Eighteen calls for fires were answered from Saturday afternoon to Sunday midnight. The damage at each place was very small. Most incidents were caused by sparks and defective chimneys according to the fire department report.
The local Weather Bureau office forecasts rain for Mobile tonight and Tuesday. A drop in temperature is expected as part of the unsettled, cooler spell.
Four inmates escaped from the Detroit House of Correction this morning by tearing bars from a corridor window and dodging a barrage of bullets. The escape occurred while about 360 prisoners were taken to breakfast. The fugitives were Frank Wysocki serving 15 years for burglary. David and Julius Jansen each serving five years for automobile theft. and Dan Barnock serving three years for felonious assault.
Bert Cambridge claimed he was beaten by strike sympathizers after appearing at Newport police headquarters. He said he lives in Youngstown and worked at Newport Rolling Mills where workers are on strike. Officials noted Gov Morrow planned to visit Newport Tuesday to aid settlement efforts.
Washington January 16. Far East delegation from the Chita Republic accuses Japan of a feverish effort to block consideration of Russian and Far Eastern issues at the Washington conference. The group reaffirms its published documents and charges deep Japanese intrigues in Siberia while claiming Japan uses the Darien conference as camouflage to thwart progress.
Frederick Engstrum president of Newport Nip Company of Wilmington N C said a revised proposal for lease of government property at Muscle Shoals will be submitted soon. He and J H Levering began a detailed inspection of the property and gave no definite outline of changes.
Fire blamed for $75,000 damage in Douglas Georgia after an earlier blaze yesterday. An explosion sent worker J.J. Pickern flying from a rig. his condition was reported as ill.
Otto S. Reinhart, store clerk, seeks $25,000 damages from W. H. Knox A. W. Crow E. Tranum O. D. Moates and Soke daniels state law enforcement officers and the National Surety Company bondsmen alleging a June raid on his Royal Street home for contraband liquor in which he was abused handcuffed and treated roughly only blackberry wine found. The case is on the call of the circuit court with L. L. Phillips chief state law enforcement officer of Alabama present.
United Press reports the nationwide drive to raise a million dollars for a Woodrow Wilson foundation to honor the late president. The public is invited to contribute during a Wilson hour noon to 1 PM at local headquarters. In New Jersey Governor Edwards becomes first donor with a $100 check.
Lashed to the hatch of a waterlogged derelict off the Jersey coast eight men from the James M. W. Hall faced two days without food or water. They used their last match to flare gasoline in a dishpan, a signal seen by the West Canon lookout, and the crew was rescued to New York.
Passengers aboard the Shinyo Maru reported a 200 foot iceberg rising ten feet from the water seen 25 hours out of Honolulu on January 16. The berg lay about three quarters of a mile away as the ship traveled at sixteen knots. Captain Yadi Maki warned via wireless alerts from the port of San Francisco.
Sam Angelides a Greek worker at a restaurant in Atlanta was assaulted by three masked men who bound his head with soaked cloth after knocking him down. He suffered a fractured skull and may die. Robbers escaped as other employees arrived. about $806 in a safe was left untouched.
The first annual treasury appropriation measure was reported to the Senate by the appropriations committee. The bill totals $120,272,000, an increase of $1,466,009 over the house version.
Rep Rufus Hardy of the sixth Texas district says he will not run again after serving eight terms in the House. He is the ranking Democratic member of the merchant marine committee.

Rescue efforts continue for five missing aviators who disappeared between MIAMA Florida and Bimini on Friday. Cincinnati dispatch reports Mayor Unger of Tiffin launching a campaign against profiteers by creating three bread stores, with Toledo bread sold at six cents and locally priced at eight cents. He will earmark the one cent profit for further investigations into lowering living costs after bakers refused a 25 percent price cut.
Richmond Virginia faced a streetcar strike with few cars running on main routes. Conductors and other workers were idle from the prior afternoon, leaving service sparse and city traffic disrupted.
