A winter cold wave looms for Mobile with 2 percent degrees, seven degrees below freezing, as the forecast calls for frost. Homeowners are urged to protect pipes and growers to shield crops while officials track a Pennsylvania Senate election balloting inquiry and subpoenas target Philadelphia officials.
United States Deputy Marshal Ed Gwin and Post Office Inspector W L Culberson chased a fleeing negro in Choctaw county near Melvin Alabama. The car wrecked on a hill leaving the man and a white youth injured. The negro was shot in the air and captured after reaching Gilbertown. He faces postal charges and prior federal conviction. The white driver Connor was badly hurt but released. The case targets goods bought from mail order houses with fictitious checks. The report also notes a Mexico to Paris inquiry into Isadora Duncan and Tolstoy heirs.
A fast moving wintry front with sub freezing temps and varying winds is expected to sweep the Atlantic seaboard from northern New England to northern Florida. Mayor William A. Dever of Calon may attend the Saenger Theatre opening in Mobile next Tuesday. Henry T. Hartwell reports the city chief executive was urged to come to Mobile after attending a banquet at the Edgewater Gulf hotel on Monday night. If he visits, Dever and his party would be the city commission’s guests.
Alabama skies clear but turning colder tonight with freezing temperatures and frost likely. Northwest winds diminish by Saturday. Mississippi follows a similar pattern with freezing coastal temperatures and frost, northwest winds easing through the period.
Alabama legislators will travel to Mobile during the session to inspect the state port project funded by the state and overseen by Major General William L. Sibert. Angelion drum still and 15 barrels of mash were seized yesterday afternoon in the Long Branch swamp 12 miles north of Mobile by Sheriff’s deputies Farmer Stringfellow and Burch. James Collier of 661 Canal Street was fined 100 or 90 days for prohibition violation and Rebecca Caldwell of 200 South Wilkinson Street was fined 90 days or for the same offense.
Officers and teachers of St. John's Episcopal church school will meet at Miss Picker's residence at Monroe and Warren streets at 8 o'clock tonight. Superintendent Frank E. Lestie requests full attendance as important business will be discussed.
In Richmond Virginia on January 14 William Gee a 17 year old Black man was electrocuted after confronting an elderly white woman in Warwick county. The case drew attention to racial tensions and capital punishment practices in the area.
In Little Rock on January 14 a woods man wandered city streets, carving poles as he searched for his way. Police intercepted him and questioned his intent, noting his odd path and confusion before clarifying his origin.
In Kentucky a 81 year old farmer George Scearce was found dead in a Buckner home with his Bible nearby. The skull was crushed, no struggle evident, no robbery motive. Police suspect execution as he prepared for church, with church attendance noted.
Six men in evening clothes and two employees were arrested during a raid on an alleged gambling resort at Helmhaven on the Gulf in Biloxi Mississippi. Five women in evening gowns in the building were not arrested. Paraphernalia used in ecicapy worth thousands of dollars and $660 in cash were seized. Names of guests not released.

The Louisville and Nashville railroad announces a proposed rate cut of fifty cents per ton on fertilizer shipped from Mobile and Pensacola to north Alabama routes including Nashville Columbia and Mt. Sterling. The new rate to Nashville is set at 3.08 dollars per ton plus a 60 cent per ton billing charge.
W M Boykin assistant superintendent of the New Orleans and Mobile division of the L N returned to the city last night after visiting Gulfport and Ox to confer with President W K Cole and other officials of the line.

The Mobile Rifles under Captain G S McKinstry depart Sunday night for Montgomery to participate in Governor Graves inauguration wearing full dress uniforms. Major J J Alvarez and Captains D M G Unger and J Leslie Taylor join the unit. Mobile city commission and Chamber of Commerce fund $200 for expenses.
Four negro firemen of the steamer Cibao held by federal officials for smuggling and concealing liquor. Customs inspectors found two quarts of rum on the ship. vessel arrived from Cristobal. Names listed as L. Normin Barret Theophelus Haldson James Davis and James Jones. Charged with violating the tariff act. Affidavits by Chief Customs Inspector H. O. Smith.
In Mexico City the oil tanker Eracrelo Tampico exploded and caught fire after a collision, killing about thirty and injuring many. Survivors described being blown apart by the blast as the ship burned and crews fought the flames.
