Cincinnati faces flood danger as the Ohio river rises rapidly after a three day rain. At 7 am gauges showed 45 feet, 18 feet above yesterday, with flood stage at 50 feet expected within hours. Mill Creek and surrounding rivers also overflowed their banks.
Heavy rains in southern Ohio prompted flood warnings from the U S weather bureau for the lower Scioto river with possible warnings later for the lower Muskingum river.
Heavy rainfall over 36 hours raises Ohio river danger levels in Wheeling area. Weather bureau reports 1.66 inches in the 24 hours to 8 am, with rains continuing. Wheeling Creek and tributaries run bank-full, suburban creeks higher than in November flood stage.
Heavy rains in the Monongahela watershed pushed river levels high as the weather bureau predicted a flood crest of 22 feet on the Ohio River Christmas morning. The Ohio is expected to rise beyond that level, with Wheeling to see the surge Monday morning and Parkersburg shortly after.
In Gizeh near Cairo riots erupted during Egyptian nationalist agitation when students attacked government survey offices. British troops moved from Cairo to restore order. early reports list five natives killed and 20 wounded. In Cairo itself no major disturbances were seen, apart from minor issues at Tanta. Six followers of Zagloul Pasha were expelled from Cairo by order of Field Marshal Allenby.
New York reports Hanukkah begins on Christmas Eve this year. Jewish families worldwide will light candles each night for seven nights, adding one more to the Menorah. The festival recalls the sacred oil preserved in the temple by the Maccabees and the miracle of lasting flame.
A cablegram to the American International corporation reports that the treaty between Colombia and the United States has been ratified by the Colombian Congress, with New York hearing the news in brief.
AR Earle Dec 24 Hundreds of volunteers clear wreckage and attend rescued victims of the storm area near Clarksdale 20 miles away. Clarksdale is nearly wiped out and fatalities may reach twenty or more as reports come in. Wires down cut off communication Ambulances and nurses rushed from Memphis. Marion residents rush to scene. Two white women seriously injured and two homes demolished near Crawford ten miles away.
A deadly storm near Clarksdale Ark 17 miles northwest of Memphis left eight black victims and one white dead and many more injured. The disaster collapsed a store roof trapping workers while others escaped with minor injuries. Ambulances and doctors rushed to the scene as communication failed and rescuers worked into the night.
Washington December 24 Christmas will be a working day for most delegates to the conference task. No formal sessions are planned over the holidays but private talks will continue to clear pending issues. The British delegation will be hosted at a reception by Ambassador and Lady Geddes while other groups observe few formal observances.
In Camden New Jersey a young boy mailed a note to Santa while responding to a fire alarm in the business district. Firemen found him beside the alert box holding the Santa letter and led him to the nearby posting box before resuming duties.
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized the Fort Smith and Western railway of Arkansas to issue 62,460 shares of common stock and $1,500,000 in par value bonds to raise $2,744,000 in second mortgage bonds. Funds will be used to exchange for first mortgage bonds, with a foreclosure sale of its properties planned within 60 days.
Washington December 24 The naval disarmament committee hoped to settle the British proposal to abolish the submarine and proceed to France auxiliary tonnage under the limitation plan. France seeks a 90 000 ton submarine and larger cruiser tonnage while Britain warns it will build up anti submarine forces if no agreement is reached.
Secretary Mellon announced the treasury's stance on a soldier bonus remains as in July. He said no tax on light wines and beer is being considered to fund the bonus, noting such a levy would not align with retrenchment goals. The treasury estimates a wine and beer tax would yield about $500 in revenue.
About 250 state troops arrived in Newport under Col. H. H. Denhardt and marched to the mill district amid drizzle. A spree of robberies and two kidnappings rocked Chicago on Christmas Eve night. A Des Moines manufacturer was beaten and dumped near the city outskirts after his car was seized. John McRae and Edith McRae with John Allen suffered robberies and humiliations while bandits seized $800 and jewelry. A Carson Pierie detective was wounded during a store pursuit as a Blum’s Shop delivery wagon carrying $25,000 in furs was robbed.
Fifty prohibition agents in dress suits led by Harvey L. Duncan will patrol principal hotels cafes and restaurants in Philadelphia for Christmas and New Year celebrations. They aim to enforce the Volstead act and keep liquor from flowing during the holidays.
A Mercantile Express engine and two cars derailed near Buffington Indiana as it headed east from Chicago. Scores escaped injury though telegraph wires were demolished, delaying details. No serious injuries reported to Pennsylvania officials as of early today.
Clear and cold conditions are forecast with a low near freezing in many areas. A sharp cold wave from the north is expected to push southward bringing subfreezing temperatures as far as the southern states. A tornado demolished the Tisdale plantation home in Monroe killing Mia. Mary Spain and injuring her two children Nellie and Edgar. Six enslaved people were killed at the Parker place near the same plantation. North eastern Louisiana parishes reported in the storm path. A separate Mississippi report notes three Black victims and many injuries from a tornado damaging the Dawson and Sutton plantations near Greenwood.
Philip 8. Honywood son of Sir John Wiliam Honywood from Powderham Castle Exeter was savagely beaten and robbed of a large sum near his home by a man who hailed a ride with him in Newark earlier in the day. He was struck with a slingshot and bound before freeing himself and collapsing at a nearby house.
R G Cobb traffic manager of the Chamber of Commerce files a protest with the Alabama Public Service Commission against the 3.63 per gross ton rail rate for pig iron from Alabama furnaces to Mobile. He urges a 2.75 rate. A separate protest challenges American Railway Express refusal to publish the same rate from Mobile to Alabama points as on lemons. The Southeastern Express has set the rate, while American declines.
Lima reports Peru replying to Chile's note on arbitration points and proposing that representatives of Chile and Peru meet in Washington to decide bases for arbitration under U S sponsorship.
Police report a man arrested for passing worthless checks to merchants in Crescent City. Another suspect, J T Cunningham, already jailed for similar charges after merchants complained of counterfeit payments. Detectives Adams and Desmond captured the suspect after a nighttime pursuit. A second arrest in a similar case was made within a week.
M. C. Wilson, held in county jail without bail since December 4 after the shooting of D. J. Jones at Watkins's dairy, was released on bond after City Hospital advised he would recover and is out of danger. Trial set for January 10. police circles hint at another arrest and possible sensational developments.
Washington December 24. President Harding and Mrs. Harding will observe a simple Christmas at the White House inviting a few close friends. If weather allows they may make several calls on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. He plans to hang a stocking on the White House mantle and White House staff will receive small gifts. After Christmas he expects a few days rest at Pinehurst North Carolina before returning to Washington for open house on New Year Monday.
New York firm Smith and Jaffe offered to auction the Mobile Ship Building Company property with a $250000 guarantee. Judge Robert T. Ervin ruled the firm failed to meet the offer’s terms and an order allowing acceptance will be set aside if the terms are not complied with immediately.
Sen. J. Thomas Heflin of Alabama publishes a letter to Secretary Weeks urging settlement of negotiations with Henry Ford over leasing and purchasing the government nitrate and water power project at Muscle Shoals. He calls the announcement a splendid Christmas gift to the South.

The effort, aided by the Ladies of Santa Claus and stage crew, raised funds surpassing four thousand dollars.
Shipping board ship Mount Evans is in distress 600 miles from Boston with no fuel oil. Messages say the vessel, bound Antwerp to New York with valuable freight, carries 50 officers and men and has not received further word.
