Senate and house committees clash over drought relief funding. McNary backs 60 million to 100 million range as Alabama Senator Black cites 12 000 destitute families in drought counties. Democratic and Republican members push for swift action and larger totals.
Mrs Fredericka Dupkin was tied to a stairpost by her cook and a masked man as two others fled with jewelry and silverware valued around 10000. Her brother Philip B Perlman, former Maryland secretary of state, summoned police after a call from New York. The cook allegedly named Jeanne Babrika and a Newark New Jersey reference given by the suspect was not investigated.
Partly cloudy and colder Friday night with Saturday fair and colder. Alabama expects partly cloudy conditions with colder air Friday night and Saturday. Mississippi forecast shows fair conditions tonight and Saturday with frost in interior south Friday night and colder in the southeast Saturday.
The Tombigbee river and its branches will rise tonight and probably Saturday with irregular rises expected on the Alabama river at Mont and likely at Selma.
In Denver on December 5 a defense witness described police tactics she faced after her arrest for allegedly murdering her 10 year old stepdaughter Leona. Pearl O Loughlin testified she endured hours of questioning without confession while officers pressured her to talk.
Gifford A Cochran wealthy social figure and business executive was found dead today in the hallway of his Madison avenue apartment likely from heart disease. Cochran led Alexander Smith and Sons Yonkers carpet makers and headed several other concerns. His racing stable had 40 victories last season with green and old gold colors earning 72 money finishes.
In Kansas City Kansas the jury for Major Charles A. Shepard the army medical officer accused of poisoning his wife is being chosen. Eleven jurors were considered with two excused for ill health. Surgeon General Major General M W Ireland is expected as the first government witness regarding army medical reports on the Fort Riley death in June 1929.
Mrs J M Keith Miller the Australian flier who said she was blown off course to barren Andros Island arrived in Miami by chartered seaplane. She was accompanied by Captain W N Lancaster and John Liggett III. She planned to attempt a Havana Miami flight within 24 hours.
The Farm Board told Congress that agriculture must cut production to match consumption and move toward a self controlled distribution system. Its first annual report covers 1930 results, notes failed cotton acreage curtailment and a bleak wheat outlook through 1937 with prices likely to fall.
The Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the Southern States suspends four Mississippi schools, effective Sept. 1, 1931, placing them as non participating members. New officers are named including Brown, Caldwell, Ensley and Snavely, with Campbell as retiring president. The convention bids come from Memphis, Montgomery, Durham and Chattanooga.
Judge Claude A. Grayson of the circuit court will hear arguments Saturday on the motion to transfer the George A. Taylor Mobile and Ohio railroad accounting case to federal court. Taylor, a minority stockholder, seeks dividends alleged due since the Mobile and Ohio was taken over by the Southern Railway. About 6 million dollars is involved. Two related cases by John J. Neff and Irving Schiesinger were moved to the U.S. court earlier.
Lee Miller told Judge J Blocker Thornton in circuit court he would enter a guilty plea on January 5 for theft of a dog during Mobile county's first annual fox hunt. Mrs. Carl A. Klinge announced plans for an exhibition of lighted Christmas trees on Mobile lawns during the holidays. The Junior Garden Club, sponsors, shared progress with the Forum Club. Mobile merchants cooperate. Prizes in several divisions to be announced later for best living tree, best designed private window, and prettiest shop window.
The cornerstone for Central Baptist church auditorium will be laid Sunday at 3 PM. Public program led by Dr. John W. Phillips with Dr. A. J. Preston and preacher-architect Dr. N. O. Patterson directing. auditorium expected to cost 30 000 dollars and be finished in February.
Bond was denied for Boyd Tanner 27 of Lucedale Mississippi and Martin alias Bob Stringfellow 22 of Hiccola Mississippi after they were arrested by city and federal authorities on a robbery warrant from Walter Alexander who says he was robbed at gunpoint near the Tanner Williams settlement near the Mississippi line. Federal charge includes violation of the federal auto theft act for taking Alexander's car and $35. Alexander says he was shot in the right hand during the robbery.
The Mobile Property Owners Tax Relief Association formed with about 200 attendees at the Battle House auditorium. Real property owners in Mobile may join, and a 12-member board, led by President Peyton Norville, was elected.
Meteorologists forecast possible squalls and brisk southerly winds for Mobile in the next 24 hours after a heavy rain. The weather bureau issued a small craft warning from Mobile to Carrabelle Florida at 8:00 a.m. noting a disturbance over Arkansas moving northeastward and possible further temperature drop Friday night and Saturday.
Will McCarty and T W Holt both 26 are held for grand larceny after being caught in the act of selling stolen wearing apparel. Deputies brought them to Mobile from Leakesville and connected them to thefts from Ripps and Ripps Adolphs Zoghby s Crichton stores and autos. Authorities link them to a suspected regional theft band operating in the area.
A monthly police chief report records 569 arrests in November with 131 drunkenness cases and 119 disorderly conduct arrests. It notes 93 dangerous charges, 58 gambling, 46 convictions, 47 traffic violations including 15 reckless driving, 71 state-law arrests with 4 theft related charges, one murder, one manslaughter, eight fugitives, fines totaling 1150 dollars, pension and county state receipts, and 3068.50 dollars recovered in stolen property. The chief praises the department’s results and predicts improved holiday outcomes.

Federal agents from Mobile destroyed a liquor making outfit and two drum stills along Hamilton creek in Mobile County near Harleston Mississippi on Thursday. A quantity of beer mash was found. no arrests were made. Agents Graves and Howard Hargett reported the operations had been set in operation.
