Mobile limped through a near miss with a tropical storm as ships resumed passage and commerce returned to normal. The Mexico Trader arrived unscathed, bananas on deck took saltwater damage, and merchants replaced goods while residents moved back home.
Major F M Mattox, long a Mobile veteran and former colonel of the Alabama National Guard, returns to Mobile from Alaska after a three and a half year posting. He recalls snowy duties and the 123rd Infantry of the AEF, notes Alaska as an ideal training climate, and mentions units stationed at Chilhoot barracks and in Anchorage en route to Fort Benning.
The car of Dr. James J. Peterson, missing after being ditched near Irvington Wednesday afternoon, was found in Memphis late yesterday. Two men, Lee Arey and Charles Lange, are jailed on grand larceny charges, identified by the vehicle number and Hammel's dry goods store papers. A deputy will be sent for them if they return without the car papers.
