Federal inquiry led by Harry T. Pegues finds instances of price gouging on food and other necessities in Mobile. Officials cited unjust rents and costly clothing as part of the probe while promising further investigations and potential arrests.
Mobile postal officials announce a government food sale at 8:30 AM Monday lasting three days. Supplies for Mobile include bacon, baked beans, corned beef, flour and more with cash payments only. Extra clerks will handle purchases and delivery will be by parcel post from Atlanta.
Rioting and looting occurred in Londonderry with police charging mobs but no shots fired. Soldiers faced stones during a Nationalist demonstration as tar barrel fires and property damage were reported, with thousands of pounds in losses. Nationalists fired tar barrels under a banner of Edward de Valera as Unionists sang the anthem, and troops cleared streets amid brick and stone attacks.
The funeral for Randlette Johnston, a young Mobile boy, will be held today at 5 p.m. from his father James F. Johnston’s home and later at Trinity Episcopal. Johnston died while trying to rescue two women and another boy after an overturned boat near Battles Pier. Eugene Fells assisted searchers and helped recover the body found about 160 yards from the pier. Authorities believe a cramp caused his drowning as he swam to shore for help.
Christopher J. Moore, business agent of the Marine Oilets and Water Tenders Union of North America, was acquitted in inferior court after the prosecution failed to prove guilt. Ernest Wilson, who signed the warrant, was taxed with costs as the judge noted no rule required the funds to be kept by the union.
Police are asked to locate Daniel Buckley, last in this city fourteen months ago. A Windsor Ontario man sent word via Thomas J Collins to find Buckley whose mail was in care of the British consul in Mobile Alabama. Buckley’s Irish mother at Passage West, County Cork, Ireland is ill and seeks word on his fate.
Ashley Ganey a white man from the county was arraigned before a federal court in Bar. He was arrested on a capias relating to his indictment by the federal grand jury and released on $250 bond.
A community program is scheduled at Washington Square this afternoon at 6 o clock. The event features music directed by Mrs James W Cox and presented by the under direction of the community committee.
Mobile tops national list with 392 ex service men placed in jobs from August 1 to 15. About 400 discharged soldiers and sailors sought work. 97 percent of applicants found positions in the past three months. Shipyards’ continuous demand for mechanics riveters and skilled labor aids the strong showing.
A U S Bureau of Labor Statistics report shows Mobile's cost of living up 76.64 percent from December 1914 to a later date. Food and clothing costs rose sharply in shipbuilding centers with Mobile at about 94 percent, while women's clothing led gains over men in most areas, though some cities showed opposite trends.
The Bureau of Statistics reports cost of living rose about 80 percent in major cities over four years. Southern cities matched northern ones in rise, while the Pacific Coast fared better. Norfolk 87.05, Savannah 79.76, Jacksonville 77.48, Mobile 76.64. New York 79.22, San Francisco 65.58. Shipbuilding centers show higher gains in food, clothing. Atlanta 23.37 overall, food and clothing 40.49. Birmingham 19.78 with 29.84, Memphis 23.25 with 38.33, New Orleans 20.00 with 42.29, Richmond 20.60 with 42.29. Men’s clothing rose more than women’s in several cities.
J. W. Moore and Thomas J. Winn pleaded guilty in an ar anaphant court today to auto theft, taking H. A. Waters property. They were held under $1,000 bond but could not meet it. Beatin and Helen were found with the car occupants charged with grand larceny.
Perry Mosely, a negro soldier, was held without bail by the recorder to await the next term of court for the alleged murder of a Coleman woman. The shooting occurred in Adams city area. the woman died from a bullet wound and was taken to the hospital.
The forecast calls for cloudy skies with possible showers Friday night and Sunday. Temperatures range from the mid 40s to low 60s with light winds and brief showers likely in the coastal area.
J. Davis, a storekeeper at Meat Street Loop, was fined 150 dollars and costs for assault after a quarrel over a debt. Pis a dairyman used a milk can in the clash. Davis claimed Platka had a knife, but the complainant denied it. Platka suffered a head injury from the blow. The case was tried twice amid lengthy testimony.
Cole Tuberville and Dewey Kinney, both 17, residents of Prichard, were arrested on charges of taking and driving two motor vehicles without consent. Deputies Blackman and Donaghue chased them through a swamp on Conception Street Road near Three Mile Creek. Kinney reportedly went neck deep into the water before surfacing. They allegedly took Edward Teague’s car Friday and John Warner’s car this morning from the same roadside location.
A bulletin warns postal workers that using mail bags to store records and waste paper violates regulations. Employees are instructed to report any misuse to the postmaster general. The offense carries a $200 fine or more.

Bayonne New Jersey August 16 The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and the Tidewater Oil Company announced a 10 percent bonus for all employees except salaried staff to ease the high cost of living. Standard Oil employs 10 000 wage earners and Tidewater 3 200.
The condition of clearing banks and trust companies for the week shows a reserve of 53,096,710 dollars in excess of required reserves, an increase of 1,958,146 dollars from the previous week.

London dispatches report Bolshevik forces wiped out in a new northwestern Russian counteroffensive along the Luga River southwest of Petrograd. Soviet troops also lost prisoners and equipment as anti Bolshevik detachments pressed west and east of Narva, with some units deserting near Podsevy.
