Springfield Aug 9 Sheriff Mester prepared to start for Governor Emaill s office with warrants for charges of embezzlement of refunds while he has state treasuries in question following a conference with State s Attorney Mortimer and fortification at the capital.
Dr A G Ward declares his retirement from the city commission race citing duty to public service and urging support for candidates Harry Pillans and Harry TT. The withdrawal follows rumors and a mass meeting of the County League of Women Voters that was postponed due to weather. Mayor Pillans and Mr Harewell are planned speakers at upcoming events.

New York August 9. The body of John Schnackenberg aged 60 night watchman was found in the cellar of the H C Bohack & Co main store. Police say he was tortured after refusing to open the safe for robbers. A plank used to bind him lay near. upstairs safe knobs were knocked off. A hundred dollars was in the safe. He leaves five children.
General Sir Sam Hughes former Canadian Minister of militia and wartime figure was near death at 5 30 this morning in Lindsay Ontario His physicians feared he would not live many hours after a week of anemia and a transfusion.
Mrs W W Elmer risked her life by entering a burning house to rescue the 18 month old daughter of Mrs Viona Meadow. She carried the child to the stairway but collapsed from smoke, found by firemen with the baby still in her arms. Both were not seriously hurt. The mother was away attending the funeral of her husband.
Firefighters contained a blaze in the Needham office building after threats in the main business district, with damage estimated at 200000 dollars. The fire, observed since early morning, was brought under control as crews battled the flames within the walls.
A D Lasker chairman of the U S Shipping Board says the American merchant marine will dominate seas under President Harding. He asserts blasting the barnacles off the fleet and turning idle cargoes into American bottoms will boost trade and provide transport for war and defense needs. SAN DIEGO August 9 all passengers aboard the Pacific Mail steamship San Jose have been landed and an effort is being made to get the vessel off San Pablo reef by her own engines. In San Francisco wireless messages say the ship resting easy with 236 passengers and 66 crew aboard. The ship left Salina Cruz on August 1 and was due in San Francisco August 13 after stops at San Diego and Los Angeles. A radio from the Griffin aid was rushing to assist the San Jose.
A message from Eval Estonia says Charles Crane, former U S minister to China, and four associates arrived at Reval on their way from China to the United States. The report of six American prisoners due at Camburg Estonia today is denied. no Americans are to come out of Russia by that route.
The Steamer Multnomah bound Seattle to San Francisco is reported adrift fifty miles north of Blunt's reef off Humboldt county after breaking its propeller. The ship is not in danger and Quinault en route from Tacoma to San Pedro is sixty eight miles north of Blunt's reef heading to aid.
