Cotton market slides on rain and cold wave outlook
New Orleans cotton futures fell early as rain and a colder forecast for the western cotton belt prompted selling. Trade was cautious amid Washington gridlock on the Clark bill, with prices slipping 6 to 8 points at noon before stabilizing. Futures showed mixed levels as weather reports cited heavy rains across Texas and Oklahoma affecting crops.
New York Cotton Opens Steady After Mixed Washington News
In New York the cotton market opened steady after yesterday's Washington developments left traders nervous. Cables were firmer than local prices, with an advance of 3 to 10 points, while reports of heavy rains in the Southwest and near freezing weather spurred buying. The market then eased, remaining about a point below last night’s close as liquidation persisted, but support from large bulls and trade buying halted the decline in early trading.
