The National Croatian Society in Kansas City urged freedom from Austria Hungary and favored union with Servia. Resolutions call for equal and secret ballots and condemn Vienna backed tyranny with claims of ballot stuffing. The group represents about half a million Croatians in America.
The British brig Sceptre, with seven men aboard including Captain Burke, was struck and cut in two by the steamship Roselands near Savanneh. All crew survived after clinging to the steamer until a safe transfer. Roselands, sailing from Huelva to Savarineh, continued on after the collision.
Despite weather, teams canvassing for the University of Alabama School of Medicine funds went out this morning with goals to surpass yesterday’s totals. Lt. Jenle Harris led a committee reporting $655. three other teams added funds to push the day’s sum to $2,293 so far. General Chairman Mahomer hopes for a stronger showing today as canvassing continues through Monday.
Grave fears are entertained for the safety of the British schooners Clara Scott from Kingston Jamaica August 26 and Carthagena from Mobile to Havana August 30 both owned in Mobile. Clara Scott should have arrived Friday and Carthagena has been out fourteen days with no report.
Merchants at a Chamber of Commerce and Business League meeting discussed expanding trade and possible voyage to the Windward Islands via the Seeberg line. Pan-American Review publishers R Guzman and DeLeon outlined distributing 2000 copies to Latin American countries and relocating the journal to Mobile if 2000 copies are taken monthly.
REPORTER DESCRIBES STORM TIDE ALONG BAYOU CODEN AND PORTERSVILLE SHORELINE. ONE PUBLIC BATH HOUSE LOST, PRIVATE BATH HOUSE DESTROYED, PUBLIC WHARF DAMAGED. VESSELS RIDDEN OUT STORM. FISHING BOATS CAST ON SHORE AT ALABAMA PORT BUT NO INJURIES OR HOUSE LOSSES REPORTED.
At 8 am the Pensacola Postal Telegraph manager reported hurricane force winds of about eighty miles per hour with vessels blown ashore and property and tree damage. No loss of life was reported on shore or in the harbor as weather conditions changed little.
New Orleans may host a government money laundry with the sub treasury. Assistant Secretary Robert Bailey says the operation will process about 30,000 bills daily at the facility.
A tropical disturbance swept inland from the central gulf, striking from New Orleans to Pensacola and into central Mississippi. Mobile suffered mainly waterfront and structural damage. one fatality occurred when a watchman on the dredge Barnard was drowned. High winds and heavy rain were recorded in Mobile and along the Eastern Shore, with many windows broken and trees damaged.
Alabama National Guard artillery battalion tents were blown down by a fierce storm near Monroe Park. Officers and men kept guard, saved stock, and sheltered in car barns overnight. Major Dorrance praised their calm, and Captain Koswath credited all for state property protection amidst extreme winds and flooding.
Postmaster General Hitchcock met with fifteen division superintendents of the railway mail service to plan handling of parcels in railway postal cars for the parcels post set to begin January 1. He said the new service would start promptly on the first year, except in Alaska, and it would apply to star routes as well as rural routes.

Tom Berring, a watchman aboard the United States dredge Barnard at Theatre Street, was blown overboard during a storm and drowned. Crew members saw him disappear, a life line was thrown but he did not reach it. His body was not recovered. Berring had come from Liverpool and previously sailed as mate on the Clara Phinney. He had just learned of his son’s amputation news and had shown despondency but helped tend the anchor chains during the gale. Captain Semmes recalled his service in Havana and lifting the Maine.
An intense gust at 2:30 PM toppled the courthouse tower and damaged utility lines. The hurricane wrecked farm fields with corn and sugar cane flattened and turnip greens destroyed. Widespread damage to fences sheds and trees was noted city wide and along the Jay Norse Railroad area.
New York syndicate bought the 106 million Manning and McIntosh claim against Mexico. Ernesto Madero, Mexican treasury secretary, says the claim was rejected in 1886 and is completely void. He notes that Enrique McIntosh sold the claim to a New York company which sought a vastly inflated sum.
In Carnegie Lyceum a memorial service for Japan's emperor was held by the Japanese society and American boards of foreign missions. Bishop Harris presided and a Taft letter regretting absence was read.
Boats Pleasure Bay Bay Carney Lucile Irma suffer extensive damage along the coast from Daphne to Zanders as 20 foot waves crash over piers. Crew report no fatalities but ships torn from moorings, lines and cleats ripped, and both vessels nearly wrecked in a fierce night storm.
A severe storm wreaked havoc across Ann Street Michigan Avenue Broad Street and riverfront areas tearing shingles from roofs toppling trees and damaging signs at Mobile and Ohio sheds. The Southern Hotel cupola was blown in and Klosky's Hotel porch roof ripped open. Islands escaped major loss while Gardners report limited harm. Showman Wallace died of heart failure in Hot Springs Arkansas as storms eased.
The imperial funeral train bearing Emperor Mutauhito's body travels to Kioto from Aoyama with thousands along the route paying respects. The train stops at coast towns and in Kioto as mourners gather. The coffin is carried in a crimson and white-decorated car amid a ceremonial escort.
New Orleans reports the death of Da Hearne a 66 year old salesman who collapsed from heat on a brick pavement outside his home last Monday.
