President Wilson designates Thursday November 26 as Thanksgiving Day noting peace at home amid world war. He urges national reflection and prayer, praising unity and moral strength, and highlights the Panama canal opening and closer continental ties.
Royalton Illinois reports the Franklin Coal and Coke Co mine disaster has killed about fifty workers. Forty seven bodies recovered by noon, with three missing presumed trapped. Officials note no fire occurred, deaths blamed on air reversal during the explosion.
Washington October 28 The Interstate Commerce Commission refused reductions in freight rates on deciduous fruits from California to destinations in Alabama Florida Georgia South Carolina and Tennessee saying evidence was not sufficient for extensive cuts. The commission also dismissed California Fruit Growers Association efforts against refrigeration rates and reaffirmed the 26000 pound car load minimum weight set in a prior case.
The Paris brief reports that yesterday’s German assaults in the Nieuport Arras sector were less violent. French forces held positions and advanced north and east of Ypres with gains between Cambrai and Arras. German losses were described as heavy in the northern area.
London reports the western front battle near Yser and the coast shows fierce German attacks met with Allied resistance. Both sides push and counter, with French and Argonne reports signaling potential openings for a coastal thrust while Belgian efforts intensify as the fight drags on.
Eighteen injured five seriously after three Pullmans and a day coach derailed from fast train No 1 ten miles from Huntington West Virginia. A broken wheel on the day coach is blamed. Injured were taken to Huntington with several serious head and bodily injuries.
The federal circuit court of appeals in New Orleans reversed Judge Emory Speer's ruling in the Huff property case. It ordered a referee to rehandle matters involving Huff's children Edison Huff and Mrs. Mattie C Jennings. The proceedings had drawn attention for contempt charges against Huff and scrutiny of Judge Speer's acts.
The American ship Kroonland, sailing from New York to Naples and Greece with copper in cargo, was detained at Gibraltar by British authorities. Consul Sprague did not state the reason, but copper being contraband of war suggests the cause. The State Department asked for a fuller report on the detention.
Ambassador Gerard reported that Germany would require at least 50000 bales and Austria 25000 bales of cotton per month. Britain assured that cargoes would not be molested when destined to belligerent nations in neutral ports, and details of Germanys demand are being pursued.
The Southern Savings Bank of Wadesboro voluntarily suspended operations due to falling deposits and inability to realize on long term real estate loans. The bank had a $25,000 capitalization and was said to have ample protection for depositors and stockholders. President John W. Gulledge and cashier W. P. Steubenville Ohio Oct 28 D J Sinclair prominent local banker was shot and seriously wounded today by lawyer Charles Gilmore who then killed himself It is believed Gilmore suffered mental instability and acted in a deteriorated state after the shooting
Paris dispatch describes a German withdrawal north east of Ypres as Allied batteries, hidden behind undulations and wrecked farmhouses, fire four gun field pieces at four shells per minute. German infantry retreat when their covered trenches fail under shelling.
French infantry rose from their trenches and halted German reserves with heavy fire. A coordinated French assault advanced, bayoneting through German trenches and reclaiming positions opposite Nancy. The Vosges blue devils again showed feared aggressors leading the final push to clear Lorraine.
The defense of Nancy held firm as German forces found that field works and rugged terrain, not forts, halted their advances. Across the Vosges foothills every thicket and knoll became a fortress while Imperial Guard units faced stiff resistance. Westward, German troops pushed near allied lines amid brief artillery pauses and a morale boost from Russian defeat placards.
A Central News dispatch from Copenhagen reports the Cologne Gazette says Lisbon faces a cholera epidemic and Spain has halted all communications across the frontier.
One of the candidates for chief of staff of the German army after Count von Moltke’s resignation is General von Hindenberg who achieved early victories in East Prussia and became a popular hero. He was raised to prince by the Kaiser and his photo buttons were widely worn in Germany.
The Mobile Cotton Exchange held its forty third annual meeting at noon Wednesday. President St Dargan Ledyard and Superintendent Pouncey Safford presented reports and officers for the coming year will be elected on November 4. Dredging progress at Mobile harbor included a 7 504 948 cubic yard overall amount with a 27 foot draft. A new channel between Mobile Bay and Mississippi Sound improved shipping, dredged at Vassa ux Herons to a depth of ten feet and 100 foot bottom width. Tombigbee River survey from Demopolis to Columbus is complete and will be mapped. Col A G Quinn proposed thanks to Peoples Bank First National Bank and Merchants Bank of Mobile for help moving cotton to Mobile. The resolution passed unanimously.

Austro-German reports from the eastern theatre say severe fighting continues along the Mistula and San rivers as German forces face numerically superior Russians. Paris dispatch notes heavy losses for Germans south of Rawa and near Kozmechea Radom with Russians advancing in Galicia.
Berlin dispatch reports a Russian corps crossing the Vistula north of Ivangorod appears directed against the German army. Cooperation between Austrian and German forces is urged as Russian positions on the Vistula face renewed assault. The piece notes Galicia's unchanged state and cites imperial honors and a Moscow manifesto denying Russian atrocities in East Prussia.
