French officials say German aircrafts engaged in sixty five fights along the Somme yesterday. Five German planes were shot down while French sorties claimed multiple enemy losses. The report notes several aerial exchanges and successful French operations near the Somme battlefield.
Austrian German assaults in Transylvania were repulsed by Rumanian forces, the war office announced. Rumanian troops reportedly hold positions west of the frontier.
The war office announced that Russians faced a heavy defeat in Galicia with 114 miles of trenches overrun by Austro German forces. Repeated attacks were repulsed and about 1900 prisoners and ten machine guns were captured.
Berlin reports that positions of the allies near Gaudecourt on the Somme broke down under heavy German artillery. German lines along the Somme endured intense bombardment throughout the day.

Gayle defense claims he had permission to kill beef. Arrest followed a sworn complaint by Dr. G. E. Taylor of the city board of health.
The Alabama governor and Attorney General clash over September salaries and expense accounts. Perry W. Turner, assistant attorney general, seeks a court order to pay his salary while another suit targets approval of the attorney general’s personal expense account. Proceedings at Montgomery court will determine whether state services are required.
Governor Henderson refused to pay the salaries of Perry W. Turner and Lawrence E. Brown for September, arguing the appropriation section of the attorney general bill is unconstitutional for lacking an expenditure limit. The case, brought by Turner, will set a ruling affecting both officials.
Collector of Port Percy W Maer denied reports that the elevator at the custom house on Royal and St Fran cis streets would be abandoned. He said remodel plans keep the elevator in use and relocate it, with the improvements sent to Washington. The customs department remains on the second floor for now.
The body of Norman Prince an American aviator fatally injured in a French air raid will be brought home for burial. Frederick Prince Jr and Charles Prince will arrange shipment. Prince died in Vosges hospital after receiving the Legion of Honor. Funeral plans await arrival in New York.

London reports that the allies have taken control of Greece's Kilkis Lemnos and Averoff battleships. Allied crews were placed aboard while Greek crews were evacuated to Athens. The move completes the seizure of the fleet except for the three ships on October 11.
Mayor Harry Pillans has become police commissioner and Pat J. Lyons has taken over the water works department. Announcement at city hall says changes reflect control of the police by the mayor. Reported plans include new regulations and strict enforcement of traffic laws by the new head of the department.

Chicago reports quote Democratic National Committee Chair McCormick saying the middle west is strongly for President Wilson. He notes united militant Democrats across states. Four stowaways were discovered aboard the Swedish steamer Consul Corfitzon from Huelva Spain when it docked in Mobile. Three were diagnosed with trachoma and ordered deported. The remaining stowaway wished to sail from Mobile and was turned over to a local shipping master.
Road work projected in Arkansas from October 1, 1915, to October 1, 1916 covered 1,330 miles at an estimated cost of $5,605,753. The plan by the state highway commission led by W. B. Owen includes 67 districts with work commenced finished or underway.
About 200 members of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association from across the country attended the opening session in New Orleans today of the association's 26th annual convention. President G. W. Bear of San Francisco delivered the opening address as delegates discussed technical problems in railway bridge and building construction. The convention continues through Friday with a trip to Bogalusa planned for delegates.

Washington Oct. 17 The Interstate Commerce Commission cancelled proposed increases of about 5 cents per hundredweight in freight rates for ten seed cake meal and hulls from southern Texas to Kansas City and Kansas points. The action held the schedules imposing the increases as not justified and ordered cancellation.
In regular session the city commission voted two to one to deny rescinding the action granting the petition of property owners against erection of a one-story house at the southwest corner of Augusta street and Our Alley. J H McGehne owner and attorney J N McAleer argued to allow construction for desirable tenants.
Mrs. L. H. Richardson of Wilson avenue in Toulminville reported to Sheriff Holcombe that burglars took a cow valued at 50 dollars and eighteen chickens from her property Monday night or Tuesday morning. Deputies are investigating the theft.

C W Moss was named president of the Mobile Life Underwriters Association at a Monday meeting. Officers elected include Vice President L D Dix Secretary H A Lockwood and an executive committee comprising C M Erdman E Bodman M S Tomlinson and Seymour Fochtreimer.
S Agero, proprietor of a grocery at Spring Hill avenue and Hallett street, was fined $10 by the regorder Tuesday on the charge of keeping open store on Sunday. He sold groceries on the Sabbath. A second count of selling cigarettes to minors was pressed after testimony that a thirteen year old boy bought them for his father.
R G Cobb traffic manager of Mobile Chamber of Commerce readies evidence for the cotton rate hearing in New Orleans scheduled October 30. He will present at a joint Mobile Cotton Exchange and Chamber meeting to contest rate readjustment sought by New Orleans for all lines from the Southeastern territory east of the Mississippi.
Mr. Cobb notes current Mobile cotton rates are five cents per hundredweight higher than New Orleans for Southern territory shipments via Illinois Central and the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley lines. New Orleans seeks parity with Mobile on other Southeastern routes though 140 miles farther. Mobile interests first entered the case over a year ago with two hearings already held. a third is planned with a local rate expert leading the fight.
Spring Hill College prepares for a Thursday game against Birmingham College at Monroe Park. Coaches call the match hard with both teams citing upgrades since 1912. Last year Birmingham tied Howard, while Spring Hill defeated Howard by a touchdown.
