Allied and Belgian forces defend Antwerp with fortified positions, heavy artillery and entrenched infantry along the Nethe. German attempts to cross are repelled. Fort Waelhem bears the brunt while a wounded commander vows no retreat.
Senator J H Bankhead issues a broad appeal to Alabama readers explaining the difficulty of securing federal aid for cotton during wartime. He notes governors and Congress disagree on purchase or loan options, cites political hurdles and regional interests, and warns relief legislation could not pass before next planting season.
A long dispatch from Nish Serbia reports Servian troops nearing Sarajevo fortifications while Austrians in the Drina heights face shortages. Nicholas II arrives at front headquarters as reserves are mobilized. An official Paris report notes a ten day battle in Russia ends with German forces retreating along the Niemen and losing material. At the Woodward Iron Company mine eighteen miles northwest of Birmingham a local gas explosion left twelve dead and twelve injured. One body was recovered at 12 30 PM and rescuers located seven more corpses. names include Michael Abryan Steven Kalfo Dewey Ware and H C Ams among the injured.
Washington reports the Turkish government has moved to implement its plan to abrogate capitulations and raise customs rates despite protests from powers including the United States. The change aims to replace the low, fixed rates under the capitulations with new, higher duties.
Wisconsin Senator La Follette declares he will not run as an independent candidate for governor and says he will announce this publicly. The Wisconsin Progressives had urged him to enter the state contest as an independent contender.
On his eighty second birthday Lord Roberts former head of the British army spoke in Ascot urging Britain and its French Russian and Belgian allies to unite against Germany and stressing the need to subdue the foe by driving them into their own territory. He noted Germanys 66 million population and said the great task would begin with allied victory in Europe.
German army headquarters report claims the forts of Lierre Waelhem and Koningshoyckt and the intermediate redoubts with 30 guns have fallen breaching the outer circle to allow attack on the inner forts and city. Russians defeated at Niemen. 2,000 captured.
Mrs. Charles Winn was killed when her nine year old son accidentally discharged a small rifle he was playing with in a Tuskegee room. The bullet struck her breast, and she died within ten minutes. The Winn family had lived in Tuskegee for years after moving from Tallassee.
Secretary Garrison returned from Rouses Point where he inspected a maneuver camp of troops in the Eastern department and conferred with Major General Leonard on military matters and readiness.
Paris reports an official dispatch from the front noting heavy fighting along the Oise where the left wing is contested and gains are limited. British and French observers push the view that the ally line holds though the outcome remains uncertain amid ongoing bombardment and strategic rail movements.
