Boston National announces Briscoe Lord will manage the Mobile club in a farming arrangement. Saturday release frees Stallings to use Mobile for farming. Four new players expected to join the team.
Briscoe Lord, ex Athletics and Boston Nationals, signed to manage Mobile in the Southern League, succeeding Mike Finn. He was released by Manager Stallings after strong Boston Braves showing, and will likely serve as bench player at times, with pinch hitting and left field duties as possible.
Briscoe Lord, a veteran baseball man, will manage and play some left field for Mobile in 1914. He was recruited from Boston by manager George Stallings, who aims to use Mobile as a farm for future players. Stallings, a veteran Southern league figure, plans to move several players to Mobile while tracking more talent in the region.

Macon Ga Oct 4 Three men face life in the state penitentiary for the murder of 11 year old Leon Melvin. W A Coleman and son Jim and farm overseer W R Stephens were convicted this week in Abbeville Wilcox County. Coleman reputedly owns a large farm and his anger over road obstructions caused the shooting.

Mrs. John Astor, mother of Vincent Astor and former wife of John Jacob Astor, will stay in New York this winter. She rented 12 West Fifty-sixth Street for a year at 25 000 dollars, with furnishings remaining. Miss Muriel Astor will accompany her as part of plans to advance the social career of Miss Astor and to keep near her son.
Washington officials estimate about 100 million dollars of foreign merchandise held in bond or as cargo began to be unloaded for appraisal at reduced duties under the new tariff. The move will cut revenue by roughly 200 million compared with Payne Aldrich rates, with reports progressing from collectors and rebates to follow. Experts say imports may rise as domestic manufacturers face new competition, while the law marks the lowest rates since 1846.

Judge J W Shepherd of Walker County and Judge J H Carter of Magghali County are the first named, with penalties totaling over 1 700 dollars each. The measure targets fees from franchises and mortgages, risking broad effects on Alabama probate judges and possibly a court challenge.
London October 4 King George and Queen Mary will sponsor the baptism of the heir to the Duke of Roxburghe at the chapel Royal St James Palace October 16. The child was born September 8. The mother is Miss May Goelet of New York.

In Biloxi Mississippi on October 4 authorities say a body found at Handsboro Thursday night is believed to be a man killed by Black assailants or in Handsboro. Police are investigating the vicinage for clues related to the homicide.
More than 200 feet of a levee opposite the American Sugar Refining Co. plant on the east bank of the Mississippi collapsed about 6 30 p m Friday, creating a crevasse likely to require weeks to repair. Authorities immediately began barricading the site as crews had already been fixing a weak point along the batture. Neighbor Frank Haguet said he saw no prior cracks.
New Orleans files with Interstate Commerce to suspend a 15 cent flat rate Mobile to It amid claims of discrimination in favor of one molasses dealer. The Cane Products Co protests the rate as unreasonable and seeks a full investigation, part of a controversy involving molasses dealers and competition from Cuba.
The presidential car with President and Dr. Carey Grayson aboard struck 14-year-old Robert Crawford as he rode a bike at Fourteenth Street and Penn Avenue. The vehicle slowed and stopped before passing over him. Crawford was taken to Providence Hospital with a bruised right knee. The White House says the boy swerved into the car and injuries are light. doctors will cooperate with the hospital.
