A Morning Post correspondent recalls a priest who led Montenegrin troops after their commander was mortally wounded. He brandished a cross as he rallied soldiers and cried for defense of the cross and king. He fell with a rifle bullet after a fresh Turkish volley.
Copies of photos showing atrocities in the Turkey Balkan war were received at the Turkish embassy in Washington. One image shows a Turkish soldier captured by Montenegrins with his nose and lips hacked away. Other mutilated soldiers’ pictures were included in the batch.
In Norwalk Ohio Ernest Welch was found guilty on one count of assault and battery for aiding in the tarring of Minnie LaValley at West Clarksfield on August 30. The jury acquitted him on seven counts of riotous conspiracy after six hours deliberation and recommended the maximum penalty of a $200 fine and six months in the workhouse, but he was released on $500 bond pending sentencing.
Lieutenant Colonel Joseph C. Gibson who led the troops that hanged John Brown at Harpers Ferry is dead at his Verbena plantation near Montgomery. He was 79 and had been an invalid for years. Gibson later worked in newspapers and managed the Battle House in Mobile before returning to a Chilton county plantation. Interment will be held this afternoon.
In Atlanta on November 15, the Georgia Supreme Court found no misconduct by Daugherty county jury commissioners over alleged partiality toward Methodists. Albany and Daugherty county citizens had sought to compel jury list accuracy, accusing discrimination against Jews Catholics Episcopalians Baptists and Presbyterians.
The Bald Head Club of America plans permanent organization at a Falls Village meeting on November 25. The temporary membership spans from Massachusetts to Minnesota with R. J. Orr of Pittsfield, Mass. as temporary president.
Gottfried Hugg a 27 year Coast Artillery veteran and Charles W Caton a private in the Tenth Coast Artillery shot themselves after being disciplined for taking part in a poker game at the Presidio. Hugg had 27 years service and said he received no square deal. Hayes wounded seriously Caton slightly injured.
In Frisco Utah two girls and five men were saved after fourteen hours entombed three hundred feet underground following an explosion and cave collapse at the Horn Silver mine. Rescue teams worked in shifts to clear a blocked entrance shaft and restore air via the pipes.
Mrs. Jane Moran a D A R leader and Washington society figure sues her daughter over a 300000 estate. She seeks to place the daughter's share in a trust and to decide ownership of a mansion on Massachusetts Avenue now used by John Hays Hammond as the two women dispute income division.
Documents in the effects of Lieutenant Fred De Mannerfelt identified him as Major F. Mannerfelt's son and a member of Sweden's Olympic team in Stockholm. He died by self inflicted gunshot at a Tampa hotel and left letters to Boca Grande residents and the hotel manager. No reply yet from Swedish authorities.
Directors of the Mobile and Tropical Exposition expressed thanks for publicity and advertising support. They praised the merchandise building exhibit and reported satisfaction with the 1932 exposition, promising annual fairs and deciding to keep the fair open Sunday after a three hour inspection tour of all exhibits.
A Jackson Tennessee special reports a mass meeting pledging 600 dollars to reward the theft of half the ballot boxes from Madison County and to cover hunt expenses. Governor Hooper asked to add funds. Election results from November 5 are delayed due to missing Madison County boxes, with Greene County and Irvington, Alabama reports pending.
The Mobile and Gulf Tropical Fair invites thousands of workers to view exhibits Sunday from 10 AM to 8 PM. Dog show entries close at 8:30 AM with prizes awarded at 4 PM in front of the women’s building. Directors vote to keep the exposition open all day Sunday and plan annual fairs with early prep and better displays.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy wrapped up its annual convention after electing officers and visiting Mount Vernon. Delegates headed to New Orleans next year, with trips to Alexandria and Mount Vernon marked by worship services at Christ Church and a Confederate Memorial Home reception hosted by the Mississippi Society of Washington.
Judge Henry Chamberlain ruled for W C Spotswood against Louisville and Nashville Railroad in a civil suit over a raft of logs damaged when a bridge tender did not open the Alabama river drawbridge in time for Spotswood’s tug. Riders reached fifty mph in tryouts with three more tracks promised for out of town sales.
Constantinople reports wide belief that the Balkan war is near its end with an armistice likely within days and direct peace talks to follow. Ottoman officials fear further resistance would only worsen Turkey’s position while bondholders seek safeguards in the final settlement.
Sofia reports Bulgarian cabinet fully engaged in peace efforts with allies. Aimed at a Turkish armistice, the exchange of views among Balkan governments proceeds. If terms fail, Bulgarian generals warn of continuing hostilities within 24 hours. Bulgarian position reportedly allows Turkey to retain Constantinople and the Dardanelles. The Tehatalja forts see no officially recorded heavy fighting yet.
Federal Judge Mayer orders J Pierpont Morgan to appear November 22 as a witness in Motley vs Southern Railway in Georgia. He must bring books from J P Morgan & Co showing details of Georgia Pacific absorption by the Southern Railway and the exchange of Georgia Pacific holdings for Southern Railway securities under the reorganization deal.
Governor Woodrow Wilson announced that after his inauguration he will call an extraordinary session of Congress to convene not later than the 16th for the purpose of revising the tariff.
Washington dispatch reports clerks in the house ways and means committee are drafting revision bills for a special session to be summoned by President-elect Wilson in April. Democratic leaders anticipate immediate tariff action and debate on wood cotton iron steel and wool schedules as they seek to unite the party.
