An administration led probe into alleged misuse of funds in the presidential campaign is slated after Congress reconvenes. Evidence is being gathered and a plan to summon campaign finance leaders before the Senate committee is prepared. Reports cite alleged voter colonization attempts in Indiana and West Virginia.
Gabriele d Annunzio, famed Italian poet and influential advocate for Italy’s entry into the war, is promoted to captain after brave conduct in battle. He previously served as a lieutenant in the flying corps, earned the silver medal, and was badly wounded in the right eye during an February airplane skirmish while serving as an observer.
Evidence is gathered for contests in Indiana where Harry S New and James E Watson vie for senate seats and in West Virginia where Howard Sutherland defeats Senator Chilton. Democrats claim black voters were colonized from the South in states with narrow Republican wins. If contests proceed they must start in the new senate which will be controlled by Democrats by twelve votes.
New York Nov. 14 The Republican national committee will welcome the fullest investigation of every penny spent by it Chairman William R Willcox said today upon learning of steps for a senatorial inquiry announced in Washington He added that no charges or information about alleged misuse of funds in the campaign had been sent to any officials in Washington by the Republican committee
Boise Idaho November 14. James E Pincock a Democratic presidential elector from Idaho also held a state legislative seat in Custer county and was elected. Idaho's electoral vote may be three for Wilson and one for Hughes if Pincock is disqualified under the state law. If disqualified the highest Republican elector could cast his vote.
Weather bulletin from Washington on November 14 predicts partly cloudy skies over Alabama tonight and Wednesday, with a sharp cold wave in the south portion. Temperatures fall to near freezing along the coast with strong northerly winds.
U S cotton consumption in October reached 555,349 running bales, up from 500,762 in 1915, with three month totals to October 31 at 1,643,293 bales versus 1,463,892 last year. On hand in consuming establishments 1,722,958 bales and public storage 3,673,185 bales. Exports October 807,471 bales. imports 7,843 bales. Linters used 66,708 bales and linters on hand 67,533 bales.
Work began this morning to solicit funds for the Satsuma Day celebration led by a committee from the Gulf Coast Horticultural Society. The event on December 9 promises the most elaborate plans yet, building on last year's success with a long list of committeemen including M. J. Mr Dermott as chairman and numerous other named supporters.

President Inzer delivered his Swan Song retirement address recalling a Huntsville meeting that sparked a movement to revitalize the Union. He proposed questions on Union need and convention roles and urged drilling ranks for victory. The sermon noted ministers as princes in God’s kingdom and urged consolidating societies for efficiency.
Rev. T. O. Reese of Birmingham filled in for Rev. J. M. Shel burne and argued this is a wonderful age for ministers. He warned young men that opportunities exist and noted ministers’ meager salaries despite their heavy workload and high labor.
In the recent election Socialists supplant Prohibitionists as the third party in Massachusetts. They are short by a few thousand votes of the 2 percent gubernatorial threshold to appear on the 1917 ballot without nomination papers. Socialist and Socialist Labor parties show gains while Prohibition declines.
Nashville and the nearby northwest woke to flying sleet. At 7 o clock the temperature stood at 2 degrees above zero, down 2 1 2 degrees in 24 hours. Forecasters predicted a further fall in temperature tonight.
London reports British troops pushing from a five mile front in the Somme region north of the Ancre and Ancre brook. Beaumont-Hamel falls to British forces, with Beaucourt sur Ancre and Miraumont among targets as the drive continues. Russian forces repulse Austro German attacks on the eastern front.
The ninety-fifth annual Alabama Baptist State Convention opened at 2 PM in First Baptist Church Mobile with a large ministerial gathering. Richard V. Taylor of Mobile and Ohio Railroad delivered the welcome, as reports on convention institutions and the evening program were outlined for the sessions ahead.
Central Vermont was buried under ten inches of snow on November 14 as residents reported heavy snowfall across the region. Snow blocked roads and disrupted travel, with local officials urging caution and urging residents to stay indoors where possible.

The cold wave reaches Mobile with near freezing temperatures tonight and Wednesday. Partly cloudy and colder, a cold wave continues through tomorrow. A tropical disturbance northwest of Cuba prompts storm warnings from Bay St. Louis to Cedar Keys with gale winds, rain, and much colder weather along the Florida coast.

Dr Wu Ting Fang, long-time Chinese minister to the United States, was appointed minister for foreign affairs in the Chinese cabinet. His appointment reportedly passed by ac claims vote in Beijing and is welcomed in Washington as a sign of capable leadership. He is known for his wit and diplomatic skill and is regarded as a friend of the United States.
The Russian bark Freida sailing from Mobile to Greenock sank off Belfast after turning over. Crew saved. Freida carried 1,525,090 superficial feet of sawn timber and 77,000 feet of pitch pine lumber. Hunter, Benn & Co. were agents. the vessel had prior repairs after a July storm incident.
New York notices the removal of class barriers on the stock exchange. A Broadway brokerage telephone clerk is to be advanced to full board membership once rent arrangements are completed. This marks the second time in two weeks a uniformed employee becomes a junior member.
London reports 4000 prisoners taken by the British in the Ancre sector with Beaumont Hamel heavily fortified by Germans as fighting continues. The capture of Beaumont Hamel is confirmed, and more prisoners pass through collecting stations as the battle persists along the Somme front.
Allied dispatch from Bucharest reports Austrians and Germans are reinforcing near Orsova on the Danube and pressing hard in the Carpathians at Otanic and the Jiul valley as they strive to reach Craiova.
Paris reports a strong German detachment attacked west of Auberive in the Champagne region but the assault was checked by French forces. South of the Somme near Pressoire there was active artillery fighting during the night.
The Department of Commerce reports 968 vessels totaling 405,894 gross tons built in the United States during the ten months ended November 1. An additional 36 wooden vessels of 372,000 gross tons and 11 steel vessels of 25,418 gross tons were built for foreign buyers. Of the total tonnage, 284,658 tons were steam craft.
Incorporation of the Quill line adds to the Mobile river trade alongside the Burke Packet Company and the Alabama Transportation Company. The Burke Packet Co runs the M. A. Burke and Henry Burke, the Alabama Transportation Co operates the Peerless, and the Quill line lists the John Quill. Capitalization for the new line is reported at 6000 dollars.
