Germany will hand its reply to Ambassador Gerard in Berlin and cable the State Department. The document is expected to be public tomorrow and may invite both sides to clearly define terms before continuing with the merits debate on the Lusitania incident. After a cattle committee meeting, Aubrey Boyles will circulate a petition to call a special election authorizing the boards of revenue and road commissioners to use county funds for tick eradication. The petition must be signed by 25 percent of last election voters. county attorney Robert Gordon says current boards lack power to appropriate funds.
Timothy T. Tyree a former Mobile resident active in the insurance business died in New Orleans after a lingering illness. The remains will be brought to Mobile for interment in Magnolia Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Miss M. Laprade and relatives in Mobile and elsewhere.
Gulfport Mississippi May 29 Special City Commissioner Hrdgar W. Wells died last night at 12 oclock of apoplexy. A prominent Gulf Coast insurance man he was in his second term as a city official and had just returned from vacation. His wife survives.
Despite a fall injuring two ribs Roosevelt will not delay his planned southern journey. He aims to visit bird preserves in Louisiana at the Audubon Society’s request and will base at Col John M Parker’s Pass Christian Mississippi home. He appeared vigorous and worked in his library despite the injury.
Berlin reports Archduke Eugene of Austria appointed commander in chief of Austrian forces opposing Italy. Other items note a brief quake in Bakersfield with no damage, Sweden denying large scale American food supplies to Germany, Rome gifting Castle Gandolfo as a hospital, and labor and mining news across the country.
Honolulu May 29 after a large hole was found in the side of the submarine F-4 submerged since March 25 off Honolulu harbor efforts were under way to recover the bodies of its twenty one crew. The hulk rests 614 feet below the surface. Navy officers debated whether the hole was caused by pounding on the seabed in heavy seas or by an explosion.
Montgomery May 29. George B Ward president of the Birmingham City Commission says ten duplicate automobile license tags issued to Birmingham were sold and not recorded. Tags 1117 through 1126. reward of 5 dollars each offered for information. Ward says Bradley Brown, former state motor vehicle agent, told him tags sold by McDougall now in Atlanta.
Evidence forwarded by Ambassador Page to the state department today indicates the American steamer Nebraskan was torpedoed. Lieutenant John H. Howers, naval attache at the American embassy in London, gathered the information.
General George P. Harrison of Opelika Alabama is designated by General Bennett H. Young to take command of veterans at the Richmond reunion due to illness. Harrison will lead the veterans during the gathering, with attendance noted as expected.
Paris May 29 The French Ministry reports the Russian admiralty deny Turkish claims that the battleship Panteleimo was sunk in the Black Sea by a submarine The vessel was in a Russian port on the alleged date and no Russian Black Sea unit was sunk or wrecked.
Washington May 29. Plans for a near term United States South America steamship network were presented by the transportation committee. A permanent multinational committee would push a 6000 ton class line system with two routes and favorable fiscal terms. A New York organized corporation option was also proposed with subsidies and cross border registrations. The conference backed forming a business delegation to visit South and Central American nations within six months.
A radio report says the freight steamer Mackinawa, on fire in a seventy mile gale, was drifting off Point Montara after burning off Point Reyes, thirty miles north of San Francisco. The fate of its forty crewmen is unknown.
John H. Wallace Jr. game and fish commissioner urges wardens and officials in a letter to enforce laws against the use of seines gill nets and dynamite to prevent violations across the state.
Feagin announces that J. Conley Merchant University and F H Watson Anniston won George Peabody College for Teachers scholarships in Alabama. The awards provide $25 for the summer quarter of 1915.
The Item reports that T A Frey of Glaser Realty and Engineering visited Mobile to assess site advantages for a potential 4 to 5 million shipyard. W P G Harding of the Federal Reserve Board urged Georgia bankers to join the federal reserve system at the Georgia Bankers Association meeting in Savannah. He predicted about twenty five of Georgia’s largest institutions would enter, with two thousand others following, and noted banks can withdraw if dissatisfied.
Dr Eva B Shaver her son Clarence Shaver and Willis Harvey roomer at their home were ordered held to the grand jury on a murder charge in connection with Miss Anna Johnsons death found with a bullet wound in her head at the physicians residence last Thursday in Chicago.
Atlantic City May 28 The Osage orange tree is prolific in properties for dye manufacture. Government chemist F W Kressman of the American Leather Chemists Association asserts the American substitute dye equals the quality of the imported East Indies dye.
Judge Safford Berney of the law and equity court suspended the license of Fred W. Bacho a young attorney this city for two years on Saturday morning. The action followed impeachment proceedings filed against Bacho by Mobile Bar Association after a jury found him guilty of misconduct in his profession. Bacho gave notice of an appeal to the supreme court.
