The Empress of Ireland sinks in the St Lawrence after a midships strike by the Danish collier Storstad. More than 1400 aboard, 399 rescued by Eureka and Lady Evelyn, with at least 700 feared lost and many survivors hospitalized. Captain H. G. Kendall among those saved.

Becker Sentenced to Die in July at Sing Sing
Charles Becker was today condemned to die in the electric chair at Sing Sing during the week beginning July 6 for the murder of Herman Rosenthal. He remained calm in court and even smiled at friends. He was taken to the sheriff's office for a five minute visit with his wife after the verdict. Attorney Martin P. Manton argued ten reasons against the sentence.
