Dr William Gorgas visits the native city where he once lived and studied public health, touring sites connected to his youth and discussing improvements in sanitation with local officials. He recalls early work and expresses optimism for ongoing health initiatives.
Surgeon General of Army Dr William C Gorgas told an Item reporter in Mobile that destroying mosquito breeding sites and improving drainage are essential to curb malaria. He noted low death rates in the Canal Zone and said American troops in Mexico face no Spanish War era conditions thanks to advances in public health.
The frame dwelling of Joseph Green on East 4th Street Crichton was struck by lightning at about 11:30 Wednesday. The roof was torn off and kitchen sink loosened. several windows shattered. No nearby homes harmed. damage estimated around 800 dollars. Green family escaped unharmed but frightened.
Officials of the Southern Railway seek the name of a farmer or farm laborer who flagged passenger train No. 19 southbound Tuesday afternoon near Malcolm Alabama thirty six miles north of Mobile. Sparks from a nearby freight train had set fire to a bridge. the train sped toward danger and the man vanished after signaling to stop the oncoming cars.
In Chicago on May 27 employment heads of major stores and mail order houses joined with the Woman's Trade Union League and civic groups to discuss female hiring. Employers cited middle aged workers neglecting appearance, freakish girls, and college graduates lacking vocational training as hiring challenges.

Gustave Hamel the British aviator reported saved after being given up for lost in the English Channel. A foreign fishing boat plucked him off near South Shields delaying news of the rescue. Hamel had departed from Le Crotoy France en route to Hendon and had planned an Atlantic crossing next fall.
At the Indianapolis motor speedway elimination trials for the 500 mile race, George Boillot drove a 2 1 2 mile lap in 1 30 13 100, new speedway and United States distance records, marking another day of record breaking in May.
Washington Herald correspondent W C Sutton and Washington Post writer J W Annis, recently in Mexico, traveled to Mobile after reports from Mexico City. Sutton recounted six days in jail with Medill McCormick and Richard Harding Davis and claimed he could have escaped but chose safety over shooting guards. Annis stayed in Vera Cruz with General Funston's troops before both returned to the United States on a transport to Galveston via Mobile lodging at the Cawthon Hotel.

Weather officials note Mobile fared better than sixteen nearby stations and predict further showers tonight and Thursday. The drought grips the eastern cotton belt and parts of the Carolinas.

The Presbyterian Church in the U S 7A Northern reorganizes its board of home missions to satisfy critics. The general assembly adopted a plan expanding the board from 24 to 30 and shifting to four or more coordinating heads with headquarters in Chicago.
