Democratic leaders plans to pass the bill were frustrated by Republican Leader Mann who filibustered. Democrats succeeded in restoring by a vote of 205 to 152 the government purchase of ships provision, after it had been stricken out in committee by 106 to 90.
President James A. Carney of the Alabama League returned Friday night from Birmingham where he attended the annual postmasters meeting. Carney, of Baldwin County, was reappointed head of the league and named as a delegate to the national convention in Dayton, Ohio, this September. W B Thomas of Magnolia Springs named second vice president and joined Carney as a delegate. Mrs Carney accompanied him on the trip.

Turner, a negro and Avery's hostler, was convicted of first degree murder for the November killing of F. C. Avery known as Dad Avery. Avery, an aged horseman, disappeared after bringing horses to the Florida state fair. his body was found buried in a stall at the local track. Turner was captured in Washington after attempting to claim Avery's horses shipped from Gainesville.
A well known traveler from George's metropolis arrives in Mobile after hearing of grand surf at the Snapper Banks. He buys a bathing suit and fishing tackle and plans to fish red beauties the next day, staying at the Saint Andrew hotel.
Report says the extension of the New Orleans Mobile and Chicago Railroad to Jackson Tennessee would give the Burlington route a connection into Mobile. A new bridge was completed at Paducah Kentucky. At Jackson the line would link with several carriers, but a railroad receiver denied knowledge of any Burlington move into Mobile.
Receiver Owen said the Middleton to Jackson Tenn line has been surveyed and preliminary work completed. Trains from Mobile to Jackson Tenn could operate by September 1, signaling a potential rise in Mobile export traffic and Burlington's extended South and Central American business.
Cleveland officials anticipated a record turnout for Sundays game between the Cleveland club and the Washington Americans. Reserved seats sold for three days, extra turnstiles and gates were added as Walter Johnson was set to pitch, drawing fans from surrounding cities to the city tomorrow.
Mobilians sign up for a special Pullman to Tuscaloosa Centennial Celebration after plans for a special train were scrapped. A registration book at the Chamber of Commerce is open as the committee urges attendance to bolster Mobile trade relations.
The Reverend Charlies I. Talley of Montgomery Alabama will continue preaching a revival at the Church of Christ in Prichard through Sunday and into next week. Services occur each afternoon and night with regular Sunday services at 10 and 11 oclock. Song services are led by Prof Ivson I. of Canoe Alabama.
The cattle quarantine law took effect in the county on Thursday and dipping has started in all sections. Reports from twenty vats are most gratifying as cattle owners cooperate with inspectors to dip stock. There are now 150 vats in use.
MONTGOMERY May 20 Special. Russell County Sheriff P M Daniel denied rumors he will resign to avoid impeachment. Probate Judge H T Benton said Daniel told him he would not resign, calling such a step an admission of guilt. Attorney General未 indicates future action. Denson of Opelika and Henderson discussed equitable adjustment as raids continue.
Special Agent M. S. Baughn reported the discovery of five illicit stills in Girard Alabama during raids authorized by State Attorney General William Martin. The raids uncovered about 500000 worth of whisky wine gin and beer and United States revenue men will arrive from Birmingham tomorrow to destroy the stills.
Owners of the seized liquor began efforts to regain possession. They planned to ship the liquor out of the state but were told this cannot be done legally. A conference with Baughn and several local and firm representatives followed, and Wilson Whittaker will travel to Montgomery to discuss with Governor Henderson on behalf of the whisky men.
Washington report from May 20 states fair conditions with moderate temperatures in the southeast for the coming week. The middle Atlantic will be partly cloudy with a chance of showers Monday and Tuesday. The south Atlantic and east gulf regions may see warmer weather with local thunderstorms in the latter half of the week. Tennessee may experience local showers and storms followed by generally fair weather after Tuesday.

Turkish reports say fighting with Russia remains limited in the Caucasus and Mesopotamia.
Marines rushed to Norfolk and Boston to sail for Santo Domingo under Rear Admiral Caperton. Three hundred embark from Norfolk aboard the Tennessee. a smaller detachment from Boston sails on the Sa Tern. An additional five hundred Marines now in Haiti will join the mission.
Judge Safford Berney ruled the last year act requiring Mobile County to appoint a county horticulturist and deputies to fight the citrus canker is constitutional. The citrus industry backs the ruling and plans to urge the board to let the decision stand rather than appeal. The act sets salaries of five dollars per day for the horticulturist and four dollars for deputies.
Gulf Coast Horticultural Society directors met at the Cawthon Hotel with Dr. O F E Winberg and Colin Macdonald. They adopted a resolution to urge their attorney to take the horticultural bill to the supreme court after a lower court ruled it unconstitutional. Judge Berney later declared the law constitutional and there was general satisfaction.
Paris reports German troops advanced along the Yser canal between Steenstrate and Het Las, an aggressive crossing attempt failed. The war office says gas was used in Champagne and that assault was repulsed. Dunkirk endured bombing by German planes with one death and 27 wounded. communities near Igues and Dead Man's Hill faced artillery fire and bombardments.
London officials say three German seaplanes raided the English east coast last night. One aircraft was shot down off the Belgian coast and 37 bombs were dropped wounding one soldier and two civilians.
British submarines in the Baltic are expected to worsen Sweden's coal famine. All German steamers in Swedish ports have been told to stay put until further orders.
Reports from British headquarters in France indicate that Loyal North Lancashire and Lancashire Fusiliers executed a brilliant attack on May 15. They captured the crest of the Vimy ridge, gaining a strategic point that controls the surrounding plain.

George B. Cox, noted politician and theatrical manager from Cincinnati, died at his home after a paralysis illness that began February 25 and worsened this week possibly due to pneumonia. The longtime figure faced a decline since his February illness.
Detectives Lacy Murphy Burch and Pearson raided Joe Simison's home at 61 Government Street Saturday morning and charged him with violating the prohibition law. A small quantity of whiskey and beer was found.
