New York May 17 widow of General Homer Lea says Japan would prevail in a war with the United States citing military skill and preparedness. She urges backing Gov. Johnson of California and warns of Japanese presence on the Pacific coast while praising William Randolph Hearst as a patriot and advocate for a stronger navy.
International News Service reports from Charles La May 17 that Leo Phillips a year old boy has been arrested here charged with arson mania after setting fires on two separate occasions and causing damage to several buildings in Sulphur.
The Truth Society public morals committee in Washington acts to suppress the Chabas painting September Morn after seeing crowds viewing it on F Street. An appeal to police is expected and the piece may be banned from the capital, recalling past controversies in Chicago and involving Anthony Comstock.
The Thompson McFadden Pellagra Commission will conduct scientific investigations in Alabama during August or September. Dr J F Siler a commission member and U S Army surgeon said dermatological research will be the focus and work will be arranged with the state health department.
Birmingham promoter J M Dewberry announces incorporation of Tidewater Securities Corporation with 100000 capital. The prospectus outlines building a railway from Birmingham to Gadsden then Warrior River, plus steamboat line to the gulf, and developing Dauphin Island as a deep water port and gulf terminal for rail and water connections. Dewberry, known for Dauphin Island project ties and the Tidewater Line electric traction venture, leads the new firm.
Four coast artillery companies are being rushed from the Atlantic Seaboard to Honolulu via San Francisco under Washington orders. Two companies passed through Pittsburg at 6:35 on a special train amid cheers. Officers were instructed to say nothing about the mission. Additional companies from Jersey City were dispatched earlier.
Mme. Dimitrieff, a Russian singer, headlined the New York City Farm Colony entertainment at Castleton Corners Staten Island with the New York police band. A bouquet of 1400 violets was given to honor each person in the colony.
Patrick Quinlan of the IWW urged victory in the Paterson strike saying the city would be wiped off the map. He attacked Henry Doherty and accused Japanese capital of exploiting Paterson workers. Speakers warned of power-house work stoppages to cripple the city.
The Rev William Cromwell Doane bishop of Albany died at the Hotel Manhattan in New York aged 81 after a heart illness that worsened from Friday. He was a friend of J P Morgan and known for cathedral work and homes for youths. He opposed divorce and woman suffrage and championed temperance.
Macon Georgia May 17 Col W A Huff the 82 year old ex mayor of Macon will be tried Tuesday morning for contempt of court He allegedly sent a letter last summer attacking the personal and judicial character of Judge Emory Speer Birmingham judge W X Grubb will preside and Birmingham district attorney Street will prosecute the case
Governor O Neal will deliver the commencement address to the University of Alabama medical department in Mobile on May 22. He departs Montgomery May 21 for Mobile.
Troy resident Charles Henderson announced he will run for governor of Alabama. He vows to abolish useless offices veto first excess appropriation, keep railroad control, and support local option. Henderson plans a twelve month campaign and will outline more positions later.
The Senate was not in session and will reconvene Monday at noon. The Territories committee heard testimony from Leonard M. Fox of the U S N in support of the Taft railroad commission. Tariff bill hearings occurred across three Finance Committee subcommittees with newspaper men admitted for the first time. The House convened for session on Tuesday at noon.
New York May 17 Anhut a lawyer was convicted after Thaws testimony helped the jury believe his story. Anhut was charged with offering a 20000 dollar bribe to Dr John W Russell former Mattea Wan asylum head to sign a certificate that Thaw was gone and free him without publicity. Witnesses included Thaw Dr Russell and Horace Hoffmann. Thaw testified he paid 25000 through Hoffmann to bribe Russell. Defense denied conspiracy by Thaw and Russell and blamed Anhut, while the state argued Thaws honesty as a witness though branded a bribe seeker.
Sub committee of the senate finance panel opened hearings on the Underwood tariff income tax provisions. Citrus growers and cigarmakers pressed opposing interests while a planned cotton schedule change and a shift to free dyes were discussed. The panel targets two weeks of sessions with recommendations to the full committee.
Paris May 17 eighty million dollars will be needed to keep time expired soldiers for another year as minister of war Etienne informs the cabinet. A bill for the sum will be presented to the chamber of deputies Monday.
President receives the complete U S reply to Japan’s protest over the California alien land law. Secretary Bryan indicates the document may be delivered to the Japanese ambassador at any time after a White House meeting. No mobilization of forces is planned. Bryan denies U S inquiry into Ambassador Wilson and notes foreign affairs discussions with Japan and Mexico.
The Mobile Medical Society approved a proposed amendment to the city meat ordinance requiring all wagons transporting meat through Mobile to be screened or protected to keep out flies and dust. The measure, tied to a new stable ordinance, would force major carriers like Armour & Co and Berger & Sons to rebuild open trucks to comply. The amendments now head to the city commission for adoption or rejection.
International News Service reports Governor Cox declined Mayor Hunt's plea for federal troops as Cincinnati faces riotous agitation by striking workers of the Cincinnati Traction Company. A petition for a receivership and court action was considered, with hearings postponed to Monday morning.
