London May 17 Thomas J MacMara parliamentary secretary of the admiralty announced in the house of commons that 460 628 tons of British shipping excluding warships had been sunk or captured by the German navy since the war began.
A telegram dated May 15 from the Russian consul at Urumiah reports that six thousand Armenians have been massacred at Van in Asiatic Turkey. The Armenians are said to be defending themselves against Turks and Kurds, with urgent need of aid noted.
A French column led by Col Mayer occupied Esoka in the Kamerun colony on May 11. The French losses were slight while German casualties were heavy, according to a telegram from the governor-general of French West Africa received in Paris.
Cairo dispatch to the Times reports Armenians in Zeitun and Cilicia have risen, requiring two Turkish reserve divisions to quell the unrest. Armenian newspapers recount a massacre of 3,000 Armenians in Trans-Caucasia by Kurdish or Turkish forces.
A Zeppelin coming from the channel dropped bombs over Calais last night killing two children and wounding a woman with minor property damage. The airship then steered out to sea. A second report notes Russian losses in ongoing battles as Western fronts report heavy casualties and a Russian commander is captured.
An Allens patch to the Daily Mail reports that on Thursday the allies occupied the height of Krithia after six hours of desperate combat. Fighting continues in the hills behind Kilid Bahr and Maidos with gains for the allies.
The Russian naval attache reports May 16 action against the Black Sea fleet with destruction of four coal laden steamers two tugs and twenty sailing ships. He notes damage at Kefken Eregli Kilimli during the bombardment.
A Havas dispatch from Athens says Turkish forces suffer extreme losses as Allied shells blow up trenches. Prisoners acknowledge munitions shortages amid continued combat near the Dardanelles.
Field Marshal French reports a nearly mile long advance into the German front north west of La Bassee. French thrusts continue north of Ypres and southwest of La Bassee signaling a possible German retreat. The recapture of the Steenstrae bridge over the Yser canal cuts the last German link to the waterway.
A large meeting of Sunday school workers met Sunday afternoon at 3 30 in the Government Street Presbyterian Church rooms to boost interest. R L Howell presided. Leon C Palmer spoke on The Master Teacher and Miss Freda Bos outlined Our Possibilities. W W Middleton H M Walker and S Is as contributed talks. The invocation was by H W DuBose with a musical program directed by J H Wi.
Bay Minette Alabama May 11. Special circuit convened in the city to hear civil cases with about 135 on the docket. The criminal docket will be called next Monday and all of the thirty-nine cases are set for trial.
William Merriweather ex money clerk for Southern Express confessed to robbing the local express safe early Saturday morning worth 7800. He led officers to a hidden box on St Joseph street containing 7000 in mixed bills and wrapped bundles. He exonerated Harold Burr and Terrence Williams, two white men later described as not involved.
Thomasville residents witnessed a bright meteor pass overhead on Saturday night. The object lit the town like numerous electric lights, followed by a roaring sound and four loud thunderlike explosions as it dimmed.
London reports street car service nearly halted as striking drivers and conductors of the London County Municipal Railway pledge not to return until a permanent pay increase is granted. The city suffers due to reduced service as many motor omnibuses are commandeered for war use.
Four people were injured Sunday afternoon when the steering gear failed on a Cedar Point road automobile causing it to leave the roadway and crash into a ditch. Mrs Emil Kyillberg suffered a cut to her right arm and Miss Nellie Kyillberg had internal injuries. their two young daughters were scratched and bruised. Miss Kyillberg was unconscious for about 30 minutes. The party was aided by J E Perez and taken to Dr W T Henderson for surgery. The Killbergs reside at 1040 Spring Hill avenue.
The British steamer Nubian bound for Liverpool with 4600 bales of cotton 1000 tons of steel and consigned timber arrived at quarantine late Monday afternoon and will move to the city later. It is the first liner to be handled this month. The Mallory Line steamer Lampasas from New York with freight and passengers entered and cleared at the customs for the same port.
In Washington on May 17 Dr Constantine Dumba Austrian ambassador met with Secretary Bryan. Officials avoided specifics but the aim appeared to be to sound out possible help for a peaceful settlement of tensions with Germany. Dumba and Bernstorff have been in close contact, and Austria and Germany report to their governments. Officials caution restraint in submarine warfare to avoid further US anger while the United States stands firmly by its note.
In Lisbon on May 17 the revolutionary forces seized control and proclaimed a new government led by Jacó Chagas. Proclamations urged civilians to surrender arms. 67 killed and 300 wounded reported from Friday’s fighting. One hundred prisoners were taken to ships. Royalist leaders were arrested, and disturbances spread from Oporto with fewer casualties.
A Havas dispatch from Lisbon reports a quiet night in the Portuguese capital with city guards patrolling in detachments of cavalry throughout the night.

At Birmingham Alabama the International Cotton Seed Crushers Association opens a four day session with welcome addresses by city and chamber leaders. President C L Ives outlines war era gains in cotton seed product markets and urges a unified grade system and a permanent salaried president.
President Wilson spoke on the American flag and protection it offers Americans during a luncheon in his honor by the New York Citizens Committee for the Use of the Atlantic Fleet. He received enthusiastic cheers as sailors and Marines rose to applaud after the review. Notable attendees included Joann A B Parker, Jacob So, JoRe Choate, and George McAneny who introduced the president.
Montgomery reports Tallassee smoke still rising after a Sunday blaze that wiped out eleven structures beginning in a meat market. The Bank of Tallassee perished with vaults intact but funds saved by protection. Bucket brigades aided remaining structures as insurance coverage remains uncertain.
The steamer Kennebec, repaired at Ollinger Bruce Dry Docks after grounding at Galveston bar, was reloaded with cargo and moved to Mobile for further work. Atlantic and Gulf Steamship Company spent about five to six thousand dollars on the repairs. The vessel, bound for New York, will receive additional work at that port.
Stockholders of the Mobile Baseball Association are urged by the president to attend a meeting tonight at the Cawthon Hotel to discuss the club franchise. All interested in Mobile baseball are invited to speak and offer suggestions on the sport’s future.
An immense armada of 64 ships in the Hudson for a presidential naval review. The fleet stretched four miles in double line as President Wilson, aboard the Mayflower, reviewed the ships. A land parade preceded naval ceremonies with 6,000 New York militiamen and citizens in holiday mood.
National weather forecast notes Alabama and Mississippi expect fair skies and cooler temperatures tonight and Tuesday. Gentle to moderate north to northeast winds accompany the change.
