The Mobile Trade Commission departs Mobile for a thirty one day journey through Central American countries. The group pledges to perform its duty with ideal conditions and aims for notable success, hoping Mobile will profit from the trip. Chairman HH. A. Forchheimer expresses confidence in favorable outcomes.
Fifteen Mobile Trade Commission members plus officials board the Belize at 10 a.m. for a thirty day Central American trade mission. Major Dr. Samuel Boggess joins later at Fort Morgan. Crowds cheer in rain as photographers capture departures and farewells on Pier 1.
The Associated Press reports in St Louis on May 16 that a proposal to amend the Southern Baptist constitution to allow women as delegates on the convention floor was introduced by R H Coleman of Dallas. The measure was sent to the order of business and drew enthusiastic reaction from the Woman's Missionary Union. Walter Danson resigned as home mission board treasurer after nineteen years amid business pressures. The denomination touted a million dollar fund for poor southern churches, with more than a quarter already raised.
Special to The Item from Pensacola Florida. Congressman Emmet Wilson arrives from Washington to discuss Navy yards and the inland canal from Pensacola Bay to Mobile Bay. The House judiciary committee favors partitioning Florida to create the state of West Florida and the measure is expected to pass with little opposition, then be submitted to the people.
Washington May 16 The Democratic National Committee opens a permanent office to be maintained for at least four years. The executive finance committee plans fund raising and a vigorous publicity campaign to convey Democratic policies on tariffs currency foreign policy and other issues to the public and voters nationwide.
In Navata Oklahoma a fight between a protective negro group and a pursuing posse wounded two whites and seriously hurt a black man. The posse attempted a lynching but retained the man as a witness against Albert Fields who is sought for attacking Mrs. Pallentine. Fields and other protectors escaped.
Spokane May 16 Judge BE Sullivan of Spokane county superior court signed a court order permitting Mrs. Blanche Seaman to adopt her own daughter Gladys Evans of Hillyard Washington. The girl was previously adopted by Sedalia Evans after the mother became a widow. after remarrying Seaman she obtained permission to bring her daughter back into the family.
Gulf Coast Fruit Farms Company files a map in the probate court for Celeste Alabama on the Southern Railway near Creola about sixteen miles from Mobile. The 4280 acre town includes a city hall hotel bank and library with a park and evenly laid streets. The incorporators are Charles F. Peters William Paul and Charles C. Paul, all Buffalo New York residents, with a $150000 charter. Land bought from T B Pace at about 12 dollars per acre, deed value listed as 51260.
Lieut Gov Walter D Seed telegraphs The Item announcing his candidacy for governor of Alabama and challenging Governor Comer to a series of joint debates. The statement dated May 16 1913 from Tuscaloosa Alabama is included.

Secretary McAdoo requires withdrawn 2s to be used immediately to maintain parity and avoid market pressure. total notes in circulation remains $300.2 million below legal limit.
Senator Kern pushes a senate inquiry into charges of despotism and terror by mine operators in West Virginia’s union district. He cites affidavits and a letter from State Senator Montgomery saying 760 miners died in explosions and widows received only pine boxes, accusing the mining department of indifference and anti-labor lobbying.

Atlanta May 16 The Northern Presbyterian Assembly hears a report condemning divorce as an evil and urging Presbyteries to push stricter state marriage and divorce laws. It recommends church led education campaigns and formation of a committee to study current statutes and press for improved codes aligned with divine law.
Governor Brewer set June 10 for an extra session of the Mississippi legislature to provide funds for levee improvement and repairs after recent floods. The levee board seeks authority to float 3,000,000 in bonds for maintenance of the state's levee system. no other business is planned.
