Rome reports Italy's intervention in the war is decided and imminent. The Journal de Geneve’s Rome correspondent cites steps to be taken to leave no doubt about Italy's stance, with cabinet action expected before May 20 to ratify an accomplished fact.
London report notes the British battleship Goliath torpedoed in the Dardanelles with feared 500 casualties. E-14 submarine sinks two Turkish gunboats and a transport. Asquith announces repatriation plan for all male enemies over military age. South Africa riot targets German and Austrian firms.
Tuscaloosa with Cordova Birmingham Mobile and state observers marked the opening of Lock No 17 on the Warrior river. Prominent officials and hundreds attended a ceremony from Cordova to Lock 17 with Bankhead Lake christening by Miss Madge Blair and a reception and barbecue planned in Tuscaloosa.
In Udine on May 13 officials report plans for a state of siege in Austrian border territory. Police and military control rise as civilians flee into Italy. Trieste alone sees an exodus near 120000, while Austrian troops gather at Gorizia Gradisca and along the frontier with close contact to Italian forces.

In Atlanta Georgia on May 13 the Southern Wholesale Growers Association opened with President J H McLaurin urging focus on business and consumer needs rather than war. He said the crisis is past and Southern merchants have met the emergency with improved cooperation between manufacturers and jobbers.

The Alabama Supreme Court declares the Denson anti advertising liquor law constitutional and affirms a Mobile injunction against publishing liquor ads. It reverses a Birmingham case denying an injunction against W. C. Delaye for selling papers with liquor ads. The act applies statewide effective upon passage.
William Barnes testified in his libel suit against Theodore Roosevelt in Albany. He stated he was publisher and editor of the Evening Journal and outlined his roles in the state Republican Committee from 1892 to 1916. He denied controlling the party's direction, noting other leaders like Platt held that power.
