Prosperity candidate for governor wins with a 1737 vote edge. Carries every city ward and most county boxes, a surprise result for many supporters. Comer criticizes Mobile voters as irresponsible, calling the rebuke one of the worst ever faced by a candidate here.
Washington reports Senor Olivera said Mexico freed Vice Consul John R. Silliman at Saltillo and would provide safe conduct to Vera Cruz. Admiral Howard noted battles near Acapulco with 16 Zapata fighters dead and Mazatlan fighting continuing. British cruiser Bristol ordered from Portsmouth to Tampico with 4 800-ton class, 20,000 hp engines, armed with multiple guns and 376 crew, speed about 26 knots.
Final returns show Comer suffer a crushing defeat in the county where Henderson carried 21 of 33 boxes and won every ward in the city. Malone's precinct leans Henderson by 18 votes as Comer forces suffer one of the city's heaviest losses.
Charles Henderson carried Mobile County and the city with a two to one majority, winning every box. His total Mobile County majority was 1,737 with Comer supporters surprised by the size of Hendersons lead across 30 county boxes and 21 city boxes.
Senator Hoke Smith of Georgia urges repeal of the Panama canal act clause exempting coastwise vessels. He says treaties with Britain and Panama require it and that owners should bear a fair share of canal costs. He argues the exemption allows foreign traffic to pass toll free via coastwise ships.
