Oakland May 8 William J Hennessy city prosecutor cites wives physical strength as deterrent to desertion saying strong wives would avoid court action. He jokes about a flying flatiron and notes factors like poverty and children affect marital stability while he claims Italians less prone to leaving and Americans more so.
Queenstown Ireland May 8 a city of the dead as the Lusitania disaster leaves lines of sheeted corpses in markets and mortuaries overflowing. Among the identified and missing are Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and Elbert Hubbard with many Americans still unaccounted. Relief efforts mobilize while crying survivors seek aid and graves are dug by soldiers.
May 8 report from London details 1256 souls lost in the Lusitania sinking, including 115 Americans. Bodies recovered include Charles Frohman and Dr. F S Pearson, with 645 survivors officially counted and estimates of about 1200 bodies unrecovered. Consul Frost notes numerous unaccounted Americans and unidentified morgue victims list.

Russian counter offensives and strategic withdrawals noted with heavy enemy losses and noted Soviet defense under General Corniloff in Dukla.
H C Hildebrand claims Sam Sing Lung has the hardest luck in the world. A letter to Michael K. Sheridan of the board of assessors describes Lung’s complaints about a defective machine, high prices, and poverty, noting he never patronized municipal buildings. Lung says business is failing and he has gone fishing without success.
