A report notes only 35 indictments in the AFCORD area sparking criticism of public schools. Fire escape upgrades are urged for Semmes School while drainage problems at Oakdale Institution are reported as stalled.
A noon hair committee report on the county poor asylum finds the men's quarters fairly clean but calls for scrubbing and removal of cobwebs. It condemns the colored inmates’ quarters as old and unsanitary and urges new fireproof buildings. Leaky roofs and missing window glass are noted and prisoners should be moved to the county jail. A new building is recommended amid reports of leaks and dirty bedding.
The tribunal returned thirty five indictments the smallest total in county history signaling rare crime. Grand jurors note few serious offenses since last session and urge the solicitor review witnesses to cut county costs. A lengthy school report calls for a fire escape at Series and notes a blocked drain at Oakdale School.
The grand jury reports the Crichton school has many safety and facility issues. They cite bad rear steps defective saddleboard and roof, poor door locks broken window lights and blinds fastenings, insufficient classrooms for attendance and no shade trees. Heating flues are cracked terra cotta with minimal clearance, no fire escapes, overcrowded seating, and minimal fire protection. They praise sanitary conditions but urge improvements including yard division. The jury found 35 true bills after twelve days and docketed 64 cases with 256 witnesses examined.
Definite arrangements for the parade route are developed with a 9 am start. The first section forms on St. Francis Street at Royal, moving to Government Street, then Dauphin Conti and Church streets as sections join. Parade proceeds along Government to allow a countermarch and ends with a review at the square.
In San Antonio on June 17 General Funston and staff focused on border outlaw bands but paid more attention to Carranza's forces. General Parker at Brownsville reported new outlaw activity near San Benito while General Mann continued the search for bandits who raided the San Ignacio cavalry camp.
At the Democratic National Committee meeting last night a fight over authorizing the president to name campaign officers ended 46 to 3 in defeat. E H Moore argued against presidential control while Vance M McCormick was named chairman and Carter Glass secretary among the new committee officers.
General Funston and aides dismiss Ricaut warning that any crossing by American troops will trigger action by the de facto Mexican government. They pledge to pursue bandits into Mexico on any hot trail and to cross the boundary without waiting for orders.
The U S Army near 50 000 strong has been positioned along the Mexican border to allow rapid punitive action if Carranza’s forces take provocative steps. Gen Jacinto Trevino’s threat to attack Gen Pershing if troops move is viewed as a near declaration of hostilities by Mexican authorities, signaling possible pursuit of outlaw bands.
The national Democratic committee will use Alabama speakers for the presidential campaign. The grand jury adjourned Saturday and released prisoners from the county jail no true bills having been found. Jerome Jordan John Irby John H Milligan Robert Springs burglary Martin Ann Butler John Bowers grand larceny Walter Mosant assault to murder Benjamin Cromwell carnal knowledge Sam Kelly murder.
Detectives Boltz Ludlow Burch and St. Clair raided the third floor of the Inge building on Saturday finding a large quantity of beer and whisky. This is the second raid in less than a week and arrests will be made later.
Vice Chairman Homer S. Cummings decried the language used amid the crisis and said the president did not issue commands. He noted the committee officers were named for convenience and Moore's resolution would oppose the president's designation. National Committeeman Hudspeth said he spoke with President Wilson who described the suggestions as preferences.
National Committeeman Mack of New York spoke against the resolution. Colonel McGraw of West Virginia lamented the presentation and suggested clearer disclosure of the president’s position might have prevented trouble. A Mitchell Palmer of Pennsylvania vigorously opposed, calling the resolution revolutionary and attacking its implications.
London reports no halt to the Russian offensive in Volhynia Galicia and Bukowina with aggressive actions along the front. Austrian statements note occasional defeats of cavalry south of the Dniester and failures to cross rivers as Petrograd claims 170000 Russians captured since the start of the drive. French trenches near Verdun face resumed German shelling and limited infantry skirmishes. Front activity also persists in Trentino with no clear gains for either side.
John Fincher of Wheelerville was arrested by U S deputy marshals for violating federal cattle quarantine laws. He allegedly drove eight head of cattle from Jackson County Mississippi into Mobile County. He was released on bond this morning.
Federal law bans moving undipped cattle into Mobile County with a strict quarantine in place. Jackson County owners risk arrest for letting cattle stray across county lines. United States Commissioner Jere Austill notes delays with dipping and says Deputy Marshals will arrest violators, including Fincher, who faces trial Tuesday morning.
The Chamber of Commerce will convene at 7 pm Monday at the Cawthon Hotel. All members and chairmen of standing committees are urged to attend to discuss new matters and share ideas. Membership has grown under the current administration. Non-members are welcome.
Edward McKinly, a rural delivery carrier at River Ridge Monroe County, appeared before U S Commissioner Jere Austill for a preliminary hearing on four charges of receiving property stolen from a post office. He testified he was given a box of cigars to use as he wished. He was released on a 500 dollar bond to await the next grand jury.
The committee voted overwhelmingly against a double headed proposition on campaign conduct after hearing about Mr. Mc Cormick's public life activities. Following the vote, the committee elected its officers.
German army headquarters report battles with Russian forces in the Stokhod and Styr sectors. They claim engagement north of Przewloka as part of ongoing offensives in the eastern front.
Paris dispatch reports German troops attacked French positions at Avecourt with hand grenades during last night’s fighting. Intense bombardment hit the Le Mort Homme sector and in the Vosges at Thann French infantry penetrated first and second lines and took several German prisoners.
London reports the destroyer Eden was sunk in the English Channel last night after a collision. Thirty one crew members were saved while three officers remain missing. The official press bureau released the notice this afternoon.
London June 17 Captain Boelke famed German aviator who recently received an emperor’s autograph is believed killed in an aerial battle with French flyer Roger Ribiere. A yellow Fokker flown by Boelke was shot down two days earlier near Verdun between the trenches.
The Entente allies are intensifying their demands on Greece following anti Entente demonstrations in Athens last Monday. The note with requirements was prepared for the Greek government but delivery is unlikely before next week as the Entente blockade remains in force on Greek ports.
Swedish fishermen report two large German steam ships torpedoed in the Baltic last evening after a violent cannonade. The vessels reportedly sank following the attack and aftermath remains unconfirmed by other sources.
Italian forces report capture of Malga Foxsetta and Monte Magar between Frenzgela valley and Marcesina. Official war department statement says 202 prisoners taken and six guns and four machine guns captured.
Turkish officials report British forces failed to cross the lower Euphrates near Korna after a six hour fight and withdrew in disorder. British casualties total 189 dead on the field.

The bond in the libel case against the barkentine Skoda was lowered Friday from 69000 to 20000 on the admiralty side of the federal court. The vessel is libelled by the New York Quebra Ichco Extract Company.
The weather forecast predicts fair tonight and Sunday with a high near 90 degrees and light variable winds. Rain has fallen in the northern U.S. and scattered showers in the south, while a high-pressure Gulf air mass favors fair conditions ahead.
The first Gulf Coast life saving station will open tomorrow at Battles with competent lifeboat volunteers sworn in as qualified life savers. The station is complete but lacks equipment, delaying full operations until funds arrive. More stations are planned along the eastern shore with public donations. Captain T. P. Norville donated the site.
The Volunteer Life Saving Corps held its first public demonstration at Lyons Park pool. About twenty five young women trained in life saving under Prof. A. E. Marriott. Additional weekly sessions will run Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays at Lyons Park pool with the Y M C A instructor in charge.
In the inferior criminal court on Saturday four tick eradication cases were continued to June 22. Defendants Cornelius Lyons Sam Lyons Ben Lyons and Richard Clarke failed to appear. Defense attorney Hamilton blamed the defense’s absence and said demurrers would be argued. Judge Chamberlain ordered all cases reset with only Cornelius Lyons to be heard as a test of the law. Attorneys Courtney and Mahomer appeared for the state.
Edward 8 Brown of Lockport New York filed suit in the law and equity court against Mobile for 10000 damages alleging negligence caused him to fall into a ditch on Scott Street near Delaware on May 26. He says the accident caused multiple injuries and his claim with the City Commission was rejected two weeks ago.
General Pershing states he will ignore threats and cross the border if needed. He vows to meet any attack as Carranza's forces threaten war.
Washington officials weigh new developments after Trevino warns that any movement of American troops toward the border could trigger Mexican attacks. Funston reports Pershing ready to respond. no Pershing movement planned despite bandit activity near Brownsville and San Ignacio.
