Dauphin Street merchants and City Commissioners met for an hour to discuss extending parking to one hour from ten minutes. The plan, a merchants backed experiment, would allow cars on the south side from Jackson to Royal for up to one hour and merchants promised to help enforce the change.
Stewart Brooks reports Royal street traffic law changes are not under consideration by the commission. Local merchants E H Britton Jacob Reiss James L Cawthon and W H Reynolds urge one hour parking in front of their businesses to allow adequate shopping time, arguing ten minutes is insufficient.
General fair conditions with little change in temperatures tonight and Friday. Light southeast and south winds. Gulf Coast region trends show fair weather with moderate night and high daytime heat. Yesterday’s top temperature hit 91 locally with Dodge City and Roswell tied at 96 in the U S. Tickets are selling well and a crowd is expected at the departure from the foot of Dauphin Street. Proceeds fund saving stations on the East Shore, with one nearly completed at Battles. Drago's band provides music and refreshments will be served aboard.
Rome June 1 Italian soldiers at the front may insure their lives for a small sum under a plan from the National Institute of something government. A request must be made on the day of the soldier s arrival at the front.
James Edward Betancourt nine years old was run over and seriously injured when an automobile driven by Henry Unrath struck the child near the Betancourt home at 3668 Hamilton Street. Witnesses said the car was driven recklessly and ran onto the sidewalk. Unrath was arrested hours later after police noted he had been drinking.
At a Battle House dinner Hon. William C. Redfield, U.S. secretary of commerce, urged business leaders to outpace rivals by expanding seaport activity and foreign commerce. He cited debt repayment progress, growing U.S. trade, and neutral nations turning to American goods, warning some manufacturers to shun foreign markets.
A discussion on growing demand for finished products, shrinking foodstuffs, and the need to expand foreign trade to sustain wartime gold reserves. It warns that without filling orders and adjusting terms, domestic businessmen risk being left behind as old conditions vanish and opportunities rise.

Amsterdam dispatch reports United States Ambassador Gerard cannot use his automobile as Germany’s foreign office refuses to permit the embassy to buy petrol. The military authorities say they will confiscate any petrol found in Germany, blocking imports for three months.
London reports next week to publish petrol limits with immediate effect. Auto use on Sundays to be banned except for urgent cases under license. Authorities also consider petrol ticket scheme akin to German bread cards.
Women who entrusted stocks to broker John Grant Lyman in the name of John H. Putnam & Co testified in his trial that they did not recover their securities. They had placed holdings as sale or collateral for loans to buy stock in California Oil Company or Ohio Oil Company. Lyman is charged with mail fraud.
D. P. Neil district grand deputy exalted ruler of the grand lodge arrived in Mobile Thursday afternoon. He will receive an official visit at Mobile lodge 108 Thursday night with a special session to welcome him. A delegation led by Exalted Ruler D. E. Jett met him on the L. and N. train from Montgomery and escorted him to the Elks' home.
The city commission met at noon in regular session and approved the monthly payroll totaling 24 594 16 dollars. Mayor Lyons presided with Commissioners Pillans and Schwarz present.

Redfield notes the sand is in demand and samples have been sent to the commerce department. Local glassware manufacturers once overlooked may buy heavily if sand proves suitable, and chamber officers see a potential glass plant in Mobile.
The Bahamas Timber Company opened bids for constructing at least four large ocean-going barges for the Mobile Cuban lumber trade. No winner yet as bids from Mobile parties were submitted and forwarded to New York. They plan to own carriers due to boat shortages and high freights.

Paris reports the German attack on Dead Man's hill and Verdun fronts repulsed by French forces. Intense bombardment and heavy artillery duels continued through the night as German waves were driven back with fierce shelling, leaving only minor ground loss at Little Courette wood.
Prisoners say two fresh German brigades plus pioneers aimed to bypass Cumieres reach Chattancourt via parallel tracks and seize the station. Other regiments were to creep along the river bank to strike the railway yard west of the village. A third brigade pressed the woods and hedgerows west of Chattancourt. German losses were heavy and French counterattacks reclaimed ground south of Cumieres winning a key vantage on Dead Man's hill.
Yesterday's fighting west of Dead Man's Hill and Cumbres saw German lines pushed back three quarters of a mile. French battalions, forced to retire by heavy artillery, reformed and with reinforcements launched a desperate counterattack. After about two hours of violent fighting they recovered all lost ground and the infantry struggle was described as the fiercest of the war.
The war office says French forces gained a foothold in the German first line trenches for about 400 metres southeast of Dead Man's hill on the Verdun front. Repeated French assaults were repelled elsewhere with heavy losses to France.

An elderly Florida resident 78 year old H McCoy in an unbalanced state attacked C W Moss Mobile agent of the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co with a knife about 2 am Thursday at Bayou la Batre. Moss was wounded several times and McCoy was confined to a Mobile sanitarium under relative care.
Mr. Moss rushed to Mobile with wounds not life threatening. Several grandsons of Mr. McCoy helped drag the elderly assailant from a room after a fierce struggle. McCoy, in poor health, had long threatened his wife's life but had never been violent before.
Elocution contests by Spring Hill Jesuit College will take place Sunday afternoon at 4 30. Judges are Rev Father Emmet Kennedy George J Sullivan and Elliott G Rickardy. The program lists both Collegiate and Academic sections with selections from Aytoun Tennyson Croly Arkwright and Shakespeare among others.
Nearly one thousand tons of logwood arrived in two cargoes from Haiti and Jamaica. The Sam Ramon from Kingston delivered about 600 tons and docked at Theatre street. The Sadie C. Summer brought about 200 tons from Hayti and discharged at an upper Mobile and Ohio pier. Textile makers demand logwood for dyestuffs and expect shipments to depart Mobile soon.
Summer hours start at the Mobile customhouse with weekdays from 8:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays at the usual opening time but closing at 1 30. Weekdays are observed except legal holidays.

El Paso Texas June 1 General Gabriel Gavira constitutionalist commander of northern Chihuahua went to Casas Grandes yesterday to confer with General Pershing the American expeditionary commander and is expected to return to Juarez tonight or tomorrow General Francisco Gonzales announced this after receiving Gavira’s message.
Lieutenant J. F. Hottel assumed command of the coast guard cutter Tallapoosa on a Wednesday afternoon, succeeding Captain W. K. Perry who will retire formally in June after thirty five years of service. Hottel is well regarded by local friends from his time aboard the revenue cutter Winona. Chamber of Commerce officials thanked Captain Perry for his service and welcomed the new leadership.
