Thornton Defies Party On Sugar Tariff Stand
Senator Thornton of Louisiana announced a staunch opposition to the tariff bill over the free sugar provision. He asserted his duty to his state ahead of party, citing a 1912 Democratic minority report that warned sugar on the free list clashes with party promises to cut protective duties gradually toward revenue balance. He noted that several signers of that report remain in the Senate.

Blood Spots and Hair Found Tied to Frank Murder Case
In Atlanta on July 31 the state presented new evidence in Leo Frank's murder trial. Machinist R P Barrett testified he found blood spots on the metal room floor and hair on a lathe handle at the factory where Mary Phagan worked. Barrett also said he recovered part of Phagan's pay envelope a week after the crime. He described blood spots appearing the day after the body was found and an attempt to cover them with a white substance using a broom. Barrett swore the spots were not present on April 25, the day before the alleged murder. Barrett's testimony aimed to place the crime in the metal room. Miss Manteen Stover testified she visited Frank's office for pay at 12 05 and saw no one during a five minute wait. Defense cross examination followed before adjournment for lunch.
