Norfolk reporters describe allied warships off Cape Henry watching for the German submarine Deutschland as it prepares to sail from Bremen. The watchful fleet renewed patrols at dawn following a night of slow cruising and searchlight scans near the cape.
Observers could not identify the distant vessel with four funnels while noting a second ship of darker color with three funnels likely British. Reports out of Baltimore claimed Count von Bernstorff would visit the Deutschland next Wednesday, but German sources said the Bremen would be far out in the Atlantic by then and later in an American port.
Theodore Judson, keeper of the Stratford lighthouse, reports seeing a large submarine bound east at 9 45 am. He notes it is larger than U S navy submarines. Commander R H M Robinson says the G-3, a U S submarine in Lake ship yards for repairs, left this morning for New London.
The German merchant submarine Deutschland remains moored at Locust Point near Baltimore with the tug Thomas F. Timmins beside her. American agents Paul G. L. Hilken returns after 48 hours and declines to discuss a rumored plan to send gold aboard the sub.
The jury could not reach a verdict in Oliver V. Schneider charged under the prohibition law and a mistrial was entered after a long inquiry. Schneider had a Friday hearing and the panel was out nearly twelve hours. Dennis Maginnis was found guilty of unlawful diversion of electricity and fined $49 plus costs after Mobile Electric representatives alleged meter tampering. The session for Saturday disposed of that case only. no court sessions are planned next week.
Mr F W Evans general secretary of the Mobile Y M C A will depart Sunday night for a short business trip to Norfolk Virginia and other cities. He travels in the interest of the local association and will be away briefly. Mr F O Immler educational secretary will cover duties during the absence.
Mobile health department launches screening ordinance enforcement with arrests on Saturday. Dr. Wolf, Mobile’s meat and milk inspector, warns public place keepers they will be arrested for noncompliance. Those arrested include S. B. Denio on Government street, Costos Rigilos on Government street, Courthouse Café Royal area, and Thomas Muldoon on Government street between Royal and Water streets.
Captain I T Newberry of the Mobile Ship Chandlery says the Seamen's Act, which bars arrest and return of deserting officers and crew in U S ports, annoys captains and charterers in Mobile. He notes ships face delays and extra costs when crews desert just before sailing, impacting operations and profits.
Officers and men often desert ships at critical moments to join other crews for pay. In Mobile, some instances occurred before sailing preparations were finished. Captain Newbury warns that desertion at final arrangements could cause substantial monetary loss.
F Thrower of 395 St Joseph street was arrested Friday night by Sergeant John Lincoln and Officer Le Gear on grand larceny charges. Complainant John H Jackson says the man stole $130. Bond set at $300, Thrower waived examination and denied the charge.
Swimming lessons under Mr. Wallace Wakeford and the leaders corps start at 8 oclock on Tuesday and Thursday nights. They are open only to members of the night junior and intermediate classes and a large turnout is anticipated.
Engineers from the Mobile and Ohio Railroad combed the slips owned by the company this morning to locate any sunken craft. A large force worked with assistants to search for sunken vessels barges and other small boats after the storm.
E. Keister, who shot himself after his home burned and his wife died, remains alive in a Norfolk hospital and may recover. Police inquiries into Mrs. Keister’s death have not yet yielded definite information.
County board of equalization faces a busy session Monday and Saturday morning. Greg L. Smith and other property owners seek compromises on raised assessments north of One Mile Creek. Several parcels across St Michael Claiborne Adams and nearby streets saw notable cuts while other values held.
The Citi zens Relief Committee of the Chamber of Commerce issued a call for volunteers to solicit subscriptions to aid Mobile county storm victims. Secretary Frank J. Thompson said more money is needed and urged public spirited citizens to report at 207 City Bank Building Monday at 10 AM. Volunteers will help fund urgent relief as distributing and investigating committees work rapidly to supply necessities.

London reports intensified German bombardment of British lines and renewed pressure on the Somme front as French troops consolidate gains south of Damloup. German submarines sink six British trawlers off the east coast and two cargo steamers, Wolf and Karma, along with Cattois.
Al H. Downey of this city was appointed architect for Mobile County to supervise courthouse repairs and the jail roof. He was also asked to find a location for a clock from the tower that will be torn down. Commissioners favor removing the tower and roof ornaments to cut costs.
Rufus Byrd a road foreman was exonerated after a two hour hearing. Roxie Mason and Robert Powell claimed Byrd dismissed them from the county payroll without cause, but Byrd proved the men were absent without orders. President Ward and commissioners Bolton Green McFayden and Whatley attended.
The Carranza government through Consul Garcia asked New Mexico Governor McDonald to release Mrs Andrea Valenzuela and Martin Mingoche held in Grant county custody over the Parker murder near Hachita on June 27. Mingoche is jailed in Lordsburg on regular commitment while Valenzuela, accused of wearing Parker's hat and using his saddle, awaits hearing.
Announcement this morning states that the Automobile Club of Mobile has prepared chart and information booklets for members. One issue will be given to each applicant at the Tourist Welcome Club, with free copies for early joining members until supply runs out. Copies are restricted to members or automobile tourists from other cities.
Captain Joseph Newell, who commanded the collier Hector on her final voyage, details further testimony before a naval board. The panel plans to view the wreck tomorrow as the session adjourns at noon for the weekend.
Paris July 22 German attack northwest of St Die in the Vosges was repulsed by French forces. On the Verdun front German shelling targeted Fleury and Fumin wood sectors while a German reconissance near Moulin Sous Toutvent was dispersed.
The war office reports a spirited artillery duel on the British front in northern France. Gas shells and eye irritants were used on British front line and supporting trenches. In the past twelve hours there were no important developments.
Berlin dispatch notes British cavalry mounted on horseback entered the combat along the Somme Thursday. German headquarters bulletin claims the assault was a futile new trench warfare feature and could not alter the outcome.
Berlin reports that the Anglo French assault on the Somme sector in France has been abandoned. The German army statements claim the large unified attack has ended without success.

Superintendent C W Scot reported muddied city water due to rainfall washing red clay into the watershed. Flushing mains and repairing the Bienville station were underway as pumps operated. He said reservoirs were clearing and color remained mainly in the mains, with water to improve within a week.
Over $2,000 worth of various prohibited liquors were destroyed at the police station Saturday by the raiding squad to make room for other seizures. No seizures occurred that day due to the destruction work conducted by the department.
London July 22. The chancellor Reginald McKenna told the house of commons that no new taxes would be imposed on steamship profits. He said the government already takes 77 percent of excess profits via income tax and excess profits tax, leaving little for reserves.

Lake Montreal dam broke Sunday morning causing destruction to several Negro cabins while life loss rumors remain unconfirmed. Newport News Va July 22 The Virginia League to decide tonight whether it will remain intact. Directors meet in Norfolk at 7 PM called by President Burrus Corprew at the request of Hopewell club which seems ready to surrender its franchise.
