A fire at the Oakley convict farm near Jackson Mississippi killed thirty five Black prisoners trapped on the second floor of an ancient wooden cage used to house inmates. The blaze started under the stairway as guards and nearby farmers watched helplessly. The building contained flammable materials and no fire protection, and the first floor held hay molasses and other supplies.
