Torpedo test questions efficiency of modern battleship hulls
In Norfolk on July 21 a combustible explosive equal to a torpedo blast was set off in a caisson built like a battleship section. Witnesses say the hulls may be insufficient against modern submarine torpedoes. The test occurred in the Elizabeth River near the German cruisers Prinz Eitel Friedrich and Kronprinz Wilhelm, away from the ships. The conducting board from Washington observed privately. The commission report will go to the Navy Department and likely stay confidential.
