Herbert Johns, suspected of murdering his sweetheart Alice Crispell, seeks to prove an alibi after Alice was seen in a Wilkesbarre department store between 9 and 10 pm on July 5. Police shift theory to a murder between 10 pm July 4 and 8 am July 6 at Harvey's Lake. Johns' relatives push to show he was not near the scene during the crime window.
Martin M. Mulhall testified before the senate lobby committee that a fund of 500000 to 700000 dollars yearly supported by the National Council for Industrial Defense funded political aims opposed by manufacturers. He said a World reporter cited the figure, and urged a post office investigation into the council's finances. He described lobbying for a tariff commission and noted attempts to place Miles and Schwedtman on it. He referenced a 1908 Cincinnati visit prompted by a Foraker letter.

Chicago July 16 Circuit Court judges ordered State's Attorney Hoyne to press criminal action against alleged fraudsters behind the 1901 divorce of William Guggenheim and Grace Brown Guggenheim-Wahl. Hoyne said non residents could not be pursued due to statutes of limitations though principals may be targeted. Mrs Guggenheim Wahl seeks to annul the divorce claiming misrepresentation and false residency.
In Cincinnati on July 16 Judge Caldwell dismissed the case against former political leader and financier George B. Cox who faced charges of misapplying $115,000 from the Cincinnati Trust Company.
At a Panama canal celebration committee meeting in Mobile the group decided to broaden the committee and start an active funds drive in the business district. Trade committees will not reach all areas, and former campaign workers were approached to participate.

Fourteen states represented at the annual Southern Wholesale Grocers Association convention in Charlotte. President J H McLaurin of Tallahassee presiding. Mayor Charles A Bland welcomed attendees. B D Crane of Fort Smith and President Joseph Garibaldi of North Carolina spoke on organization as business sessions were held.
The Mobile Light and Railroad Co. removed one block of track on Texas street between Ann and Georgia avenues. Mayor Schwarz asked City Attorney Boone to investigate. President J. Howard Wilson said the cut was due to a crossover at St. Michael street to speed trips and spacing from the Michigan avenue line.
George Briskol owner of a pool hall at 108 Dauphins Street filed a suit in the law and equity court Wednesday against Price Williams Jr. probate judge seeking $142.84 he paid as license for seven pool tables. Briskol says he was forced to pay under threat of arrest by Tax Commissioner D J Callahan while acting as agent for Mrs. Frank Rowell.
Ambassador Henry Lane Wilson departs Mexico City for Washington to report on conditions in Mexico. Nelson OShaughnessy stays in charge at the embassy as directed by Secretary Bryan and President Wilson.
Reports from the commercial district say European cotton houses in Mobile received code cables stating Germany will take aggressive action against Mexico if the United States fails to protect foreign residents. No official source could verify the dispatch, but the rumor circulated widely and drew strong comment.
In Tallahassee Florida a young white man was found shot in the head on the outskirts, with a decomposed body. The victim, believed to be York publishing house employee Clary, had been missing five days and robbery is the suspected motive.
Dr. S. G. Gray of the city health board warned Selma’s city council about hazards from lead pipe connections used for drinking water. He personally petitioned to allow his property to use a nonlead pipe for water service.
Representatives of eastern railroads and their trainmen and conductors ratified the agreement under the Newlands bill in a joint meeting in New York. They telegraphed President Wilson asking him to name a board of mediation and conciliation. The Erie railroad’s status and new grievance details were not announced.
Temperatures recorded at the corner of Royal and Dauphin streets show 85 at 10 am and 91 at 1 pm with 92 at 2 pm. Mobile forecasts call for generally fair, warm conditions with light variable winds through Thursday. Alabama and Mississippi outlooks remain fair tonight and Thursday.
Blossom Browning paid a $25 fine in Judge Crutchfield's Richmond court for indecent exposure after wearing a knee slit skirt. The judge refused to accept store licensing as defense, appraising the garment as evidence and ordering it returned after she promised to sew the slash or avoid such attire.

County Solicitor Goffin will not indict any parties for two weeks due to court workload. He has many cases set through next week and will review evidence after adjournment. No more witnesses will be heard publicly. additional evidence, if any, to be heard in private sessions.
Excessive heat from yesterday continued across Kansas and western Missouri. Temperatures topped 112 at one Kansas point and stayed above 100 in many areas while only light rain was reported in Concordia. The official reading here at 11 a.m. was a degree higher than yesterday.
Senator Joe T. Robinson told the Michigan State Bar Association that no treaty bans discriminatory Panama canal tolls in favor of American ships. He reviewed treaties with Great Britain and Panama, arguing the United States alone can set rules for canal management and exempt American vessels without violating Britain’s rights. He asserted the U.S. is not bound to arbitration under existing treaties.
Officers and men of heavy artillery are placing dummy mines in the Potomac near Fort Washington and Fort Hunt to train for river defense. The exercise, conducted from the mine planting steamer General Frank, is annual and not prompted by invasion fears. Police investigate a night assault on Mrs A B Duncan and her four children in a fashionable Atlanta residence. An intruder chloroformed Mrs Duncan and two sons and two daughters, while another daughter was beaten into unconsciousness with a bludgeon. W J Herbert attorney for Probate Judge A L Hasty of Marengo county said he expects Judge Hasty to be exonerated after Governor O Neal ordered impeachment. Herbert met the governor at the capitol and denied discussing the Hasty case. The governor instructed attorneys general to file articles of impeachment in the supreme court.
