Montgomery July 14 The joint rules committee reported and both houses adopted a resolution to recess from Tuesday until Saturday to digest governor submitted measures. Hundreds of bills were introduced at the first day after recess as three recess committees originated many measures in finance judiciary and graft areas. Governor Henderson opposes further splitting and could call an extra session. the general revenue bill was submitted with changes that may be railroaded through.
Italian forces captured two miles of Austrian trenches in the Carnic Alps and seized two key points near Gorizia. Dispatches from Villach report Alpine troops advancing toward Roskofel at 6,600 feet altitude. The report places the campaign fifty-two miles north of Laibach in Switzerland and confirms heavy Alpine fighting.

London July 14 Allied forces occupy about 450000 square miles of German territory, according to an official statement. Bonar Law secretary for the government confirmed the claim, noting wartime occupation details.
In New York on July 14 a federal mistrial was declared in the breach of promise case involving Rae Tanzer. Attorneys for Tanzer, David Maxwell Slade, and A J McCullough the detective faced dismissal as illness or federal arrest disrupted proceedings. In Macon Georgia July 14 a posse of citizens and county officials killed Peter Jackson a negro farm hand accused of a triple murder. In Pulaski county near Cochran a mob hundreds strong surrounded James Jackson home and surrounded by gunfire the suspect reportedly held off. Three white men W S Hogg Lynn Sanders Lawson were killed in the turmoil with Sanders allegedly struck by a shot from Jackson and later a confrontation at his home ongoing.
