Fire and Waste Threaten Timber Supply of the South
Henry R Graves chief forester of the United States told the Southern Forestry Congress in Asheville that fire prevention must be expanded under Week's law in cooperation with the national government. He warned hardwood reserves in the South face depletion if current cutting rates persist and urged methods to grow four fifths of the nation's hardwood timber. He noted the South houses 61 percent of hardwood, 250 million feet of yellow pine and 20 000 sawmills with pine dominating two thirds of eastern lumber markets and a 35 million dollar annual turpentine and rosin income at stake if forests are neglected.
