Nine unexploded bombs were found aboard the steamer Kirkoswald in Marseille while unloading sugar cargo from New York. Bombs concealed in sugar sacks, one burst during discharge. Similar bombs were found on other British vessels Lord Erne and Bankdale sailing for Havre. Investigations by American and French authorities follow.
Merchants and property owners in Prichard plan a vigilance committee to combat recent arsons. Earl Myers and Oscar McMillan lead the effort to hire a night officer with monthly contributions. A circulating petition shows broad support to stop the incendiarism.
Captain Cole and First Officer Flynn of the Mallory steamship Ocmulgee returned from Germany after wartime voyages and survived a submarine attack on the Carib in the North Sea. They expect to delay future Europe trips until after the war. The Ocmulgee will join Mallory’s New York to Houston service once its current voyage completes.

One of the victims of the British steamer Armenian sunk by a German submarine was Charles Hollaman a former Mobile printer. Friends say he planned to go to New Orleans to ship on the Armenian. No word has reached Mobile since. Hollaman had no Mobile relatives but a sister in Meridian Mississippi.
Deputy sheriffs seized eighteen casks of beer stored at a residence at Earle and Marmotte streets. The beer was removed to the county jail and locked up awaiting court orders on disposal.
Warren Fox, a Black man said to have confessed killing farmer John Millett for robbery, was seized by a mob near Kanema Ark and hanged. Millett was stabbed to death near his home Wednesday.
A Bessemer family left for a visit in Michigan and never returned home. Their neighbor, Andrew Lapp, drove them away, but on returning to their house they found a giant hole. The residence had collapsed into an old shaft 200 feet deep after surrounding ground was undermined.
Washington July 10. Navy plans to make American submarines the most efficient in the world are being developed by the general board. The next navy building program will seek nearly double the prior submarine totals with new motive power batteries and a disappearing gun. Secretary Daniels supports large increases and President Wilson is believed aligned.
A Biloxi Fruit and Truck Growers Association picnic on Back Bay July 15 will host hundreds of agriculturists and truck growers. Invited speakers include Congressman B P Harrison Commissioner Blakeslee and candidates from Harrison and Jackson counties to discuss farming issues, not politics.
Work resumes shelling Jackson streets using seven thousand barrels of oyster shells undeliverable due to highway construction. Crushed shells replace raw shells in business districts with plans to use crushed shells exclusively next year to aid motorists. Separately, New York reports United States Steel’s unfilled tonnage on June 30 at 4,673,196 tons, up 412,598 from May.
Posse units and railroad detectives scour the Greenville area for four men who hijacked Louisville & Nashville No 37 bound from New York to New Orleans. Conductor Phil McRae, initially reported killed, is found dead with no wounds. doctor cites apoplexy. Bandits boarded at Greenville, hijacked the mail baggage and express cars, and fled with an unreported haul while passengers were not harmed. The engine later ran unmanned to Garland forty miles away.
McRae, among the oldest passenger conductors, died of apoplexy during a bandit raid on Louisville and Nashville Train No 87 near Greenville Alabama. Bandits seized mail cars at bridge No 33 and seized a Houston money package. train engine ran away before being halted by rescue crews.
Rangeley Me July 10 Justice Charles E Hughes refused the application for a writ of error to the United States Supreme Court in behalf of Charles E Becker of New York condemned to die in the week of July 26 for the murder of Herman Rosenthal.
Will Wright, a Black man, convicted recently of stealing a suitcase, was sentenced to sixty days at hard labor by Recorder D H Edington Saturday morning. He remains in custody awaiting examination by the county physician for tuberculosis and was advised to be sent on the county roads.

Three suspects were arrested as the government took charge of the case after bandits aboard the New York and New Orleans Limited looted currency bound for Houston. Passengers were unharmed. conductor Phil McRae died after saying he had not been shot. Authorities say the exact amount and contents remain under post office inquiry.
