Washington January 25. It is reported that W J Bryan will be appointed secretary of state by President Wilson. Bryan has received word he is Wilsons choice and plans to accept the portfolio. He has canceled lectures after March 4 to be free for his new duties. Wilson has denied any cabinet selections while a conference with Bryan at Trenton last month left no official settlement.
President elect Wilson will be guest of honor at a March 3 reception and smoker in Washington hosted by the Eingoston Pochet Association. The event will mark his forthcoming inauguration and feature members from local organizations.
President elect Wilson toured Ellis Island in New York Bay with his wife and daughters and observed the processing of 1,300 newcomers from ships Cincinnati and Santa Ana. The visit included a session of the board of inquiry where Shade Rodowsky was ordered deported for alleged white slave trafficking. the governor approved. Women in the party comforted children and women with candy during the tour.

Five alleged wire tappers and confidence men in the Kirby Savings Bank defense were indicted by the Cook county grand jury. The federal grand jury opened an inquiry into four defense lawyers on perjury charges as Judge Landis held Dr. William T. Kirby and his wife Margaret Kirby in contempt and called the defense a frameup.
Dr. Clarence J. Owens announces plans for the fifth annual Southern Commercial Congress convention in Mobile aligned with the Panama Canal opening.
