The horse Ole Comer refused to work for Sheriff William Holcombe after he took office. The animal trotted off near Nataria, Mississippi, while the sheriff laments the loss and jokes about advertising the steed in The Item. Holcombe calls it a grave misfortune for a new sheriff to have his horse stolen.
The bodies of Mrs. Whitman Carriere and her five year old son Claude were found in a Napolenville area culvert after heavy rains. Authorities believe the mother, suffering mental aberration, fled with the child from home and hid in the culvert where they were drowned after being swept in by floodwaters. They disappeared Friday.
Jack F. Ross, secretary treasurer of the Traders and Factors Company, visited his office for the first time since a January 8 auto accident left him badly injured. A large number of friends called to congratulate him on his remarkable escape.
Telegrams report the Vatican states no injury to art treasures amid the earthquake. The note emphasizes that artistic objects in the Vatican suffered no damage despite tremors.

Britain will not grant safe conduct for the Dacia, a ship transferred from German to American registry, to sail to Rotterdam with a cotton cargo. The British objection cites fear of setting a precedent for Germany-linked ships in American trade and questions the genuineness of the transfer. Captain W. J. Bethea, longtime Mobile river steamer clerk and Civil War veteran, died suddenly at 2 p.m. at his home 253 State Street. He survived the 1913 Tombigbee steamer disaster aboard the James Staples. buried in Sumter County, Ala. He was 71, native of Yazoo City, Miss., and part owner of several steamers. He leaves four children by his second wife Ruth Ware and several other relatives.

A detective posse including Boltz Berge Arbo Kennedy Conley Jackson and Moody arrested Herbert Turk early Tuesday on suspicion of stealing four packs of cigarettes from the Bienville Piracy at Conais avenue after a street pursuit and questioning.
Fourteen strikers were shot during a clash with deputies at an American Agricultural Chemical Company plant in Roosevelt New Jersey after strikers halted a Central Railroad of New Jersey train to check for strike breakers. The wounded included foreigners and four seriously hurt workers were taken to Elizabeth hospitals with buckshot and bullet wounds.
