Gatun Spillway Opens As Lake Level Is Lowered In Canal Zone
Ancona, Canal Zone Jan 17 The Gatun dam spillway gates and operating machinery were officially opened and Gatun lake lowered to about 84 feet above sea level. Leakage tests showed 0.8 to 2.4 cubic feet per second, increasing with heat. The lake is expected to drop to 84 feet within about a week, with 181.8 billion cubic feet of water at 84.7 feet and 178.6 at 84 feet. The Terrier drill boat sank last month near deck No 11, likely due to a hull leak. New Gorgona dedication outlined for a town to house relocated lake area residents, with ceremonies in Panama City and officials in attendance.
