Washington reports a committee delaying approval of an inaugural ball amid debate over dances described as turkey trotting and grizzly bearing. The panel will await more information from the president elect before deciding if the long building may be used and which performances will be banned.
In Trenton on January 17, President-elect Wilson declined to say which ceremony he would favor as a substitute for the inaugural ball. He was told that a popular reception at the 161st might be arranged.
Chicago January reports James A. Perry, alleged ringleader of an automobile band, refuses to name accomplices after police interrogation. Perry admits firing at Policeman Fred Sticken but denies others’ involvement. Sticken cannot positively identify him after reenactment. Assistant State Attorney Marvin Barnhart presents Perry’s alleged robberies, yet Perry taunts officials amid testimony.
Miss Elizabeth Townsend a 24 year old woman governs Atlantic City's finances with authority over a 2.5 million dollar annual revenue stream. She holds the city treasury signature on all withdrawals and supervises bond issues and payroll auditing. Townsend oversees over six million dollars in cash and bonds and is bonded for fifty thousand dollars.

Dispatches from Lisbon report an inland insurrection in Angels area Portuguese West Africa. Natives attacked settlements, killed and burned residents, looted property, and abducted European women as an expeditionary force is dispatched to quell the uprising.
Colonel George W. Goethals, chairman of the Panama canal commission, urged President-elect Wilson in a long talk to visit the canal at the earliest possible moment. The governor said Wilson would like to go but could not specify a date.

A separate blaze in the Birmingham Railway Light and Power Co offices at First avenue and Twenty-first street was minor, while a vacant house at 930 South Fifteenth street owned by E. Sheppard burned for about $1500.
