Junius W. Woolf defeats Wildman for treasurer as Armbrecht and Buck lead the board in a crowded field. Parson s named to head the chamber though Fearn is unwilling in a tight vote among local directors.
The complete vote totals list elected officers and board members. President A E Persone with 417 votes and George Fearn Jr 91. First VP Estes D Baker 259. Second VP Horace Turner 0. Treasurer Junius W Woolf 300, Alex Windman. Board members include E J Buck 425 and W H Armbrecht 368 among others with varied tallies, listing all names and counts.
The annual election at the Mobile Chamber of Commerce concluded after votes cast noon to 6 pm. Edward J. Buck and William H. Armbrecht won director seats while A. J. Parsons became president over George Fearn Jr. The race for first vice president was tight, Estes Baker edging Stewart Brooks by one vote. Horace Turner defeated 100-led candidate 349 to 161 for second vice president. Junius W. Woolf won as director over Alex Wildman 300 to 209 amid 39 director nominees.
Special to The Item from Montgomery Alabama reports the attorney general was asked whether registrars must open books for the runoff two days before the second primary as well as before the first. The issue centers on whether a person not yet of age or not qualified in the first primary may vote in the runoff.
A. J. Parsons becomes president of the Chamber of Commerce succeeding William H. Armbrecht in a leadership change announced by the chamber.
The government will ask for more time to prepare the white slavery case against Joel M. Foster, millionaire poultryman of Brown's Mills New Jersey. The preliminary hearing before US Commissioner Richard Jones Jr is set for Wednesday. a new date will be chosen later, with proceedings likely to take a week or ten days to gather evidence and possibly bring witnesses from other cities.
The Interstate Commerce Commission report led by H W Belnap attributes the Buckatunna Mississippi troop train derailment on October 19 to excessive speed not faulty track. He places the speed at no less than 55 mph on the curve and notes the derailment risks from high center of gravity and water motion in the tender.
Dr Anna Howard Shaw, president of the National Woman Suffrage Association, denounces false reports about her tax stance. She says she never refused to pay taxes or advocate militancy, noting she protested taxation but refused to provide a bill of personal possessions to aid assessment and defends peaceful methods.
George Cook was found guilty of forging a postal money order and Edward Beverly of stealing mail matter in U S district court. Judge ordered both jailed pending sentence. These were the first jury trials prosecuted by new U S district attorney Alex D Pitts.
A special session of the Alabama state board of pardons will hear Alex Waldrop’s petition for commutation from death to life imprisonment. Waldrop was convicted of murder in the death of Mary Waldrop and faces execution February 6 unless the governor and board act.
Mexico City reports the government will default on interest due this month on both internal and external debts. The cabinet council met until midnight and Foreign Minister Querido Modeno announced the decision and instructed notifying foreign governments.
The Royal Mail steamer Cobequid ran aground on a ledge at the entrance to the Bay of Fundy while weathering a blizzard and northwest gale. Wireless calls for help were sent but communication has not been restored as search and rescue efforts proceed.
