Announcement shows the Port Antonio, a United Fruit Company steamer, chartered by the Munson line for Cuban trade. The vessel moved to Munson piers and began loading cargo for Cuban ports, joining other Munson ships in the Mobile area trade.
Philadelphia January 12 Mayor Smith personally orders a renewed police probe into the death of Maizie Colbert known as Grace Roberts. He doubts the Atlantic City hotel death of Bernard W. Lewis ends the investigation and may push for further action.
The city fire department battled multiple blazes sparked by cold weather with one and a half story homes at 559 South Hamilton and 561 affected by overheated gas stoves. A 1:30 a.m. blaze at 569 started on an upper floor. Neighbors saved first floor contents while owners include Lawrence Medesen Oliver Foster Teonary Lewis and RB Jones. Additional fires reported on Washington Avenue New Jersey Street Jefferson Street Broad Street Elmira Street Joachim Street Hamilton Street with mostly slight damage from sparks or chimney and unknown causes.

Courtney the assistant solicitor says George Britton, a Black man, is charged with arson after the Aimwell Baptist church on Joachim Street burned last November. Britton is jailed for 20 years for concealed public safety items and is also wanted for alleged pet theft. Three other nearby houses burned from the same origin. Ten men employed by the Postal Telegraph County will receive a 6 percent raise in monthly salaries under an endorsement by county officials from New York. Eugene Auter of the local office said the raise would raise pay for ten men in the different departments of the office.

Treasury and customs officials had searched over three months for twenty thousand franked envelopes sent from Richmond Virginia to New York. The envelopes were found in Adelaide Australia after the railroad company paid the government the value of the lot. A New York notification confirmed the discovery.

H B Statler clerk in the Alabama Chamber of Commerce and agriculture department was assaulted in his apartment early today. He was struck with a pistol butt and left seriously hurt though expected to recover. An assailant is unknown as a conference on organizational matters continued in the executive department.
Tom Wiggerfall, a Black man, was arrested by deputy sheriffs at 7 o clock on grand larceny charges. Wiggerfall allegedly stole three cypress logs from W A Kenopke’s mill pond days earlier. Frank Singleton and L D Finley Jr. are also under arrest in connection with the theft. all arrestees are out on bond.
New York faced its coldest day of the winter with 7 degrees above zero at 5 am. A snow storm and seas of ice slowed traffic as steamships reached port amid heavy ice, reflecting a severe winter spell across the harbor and shipping lanes.
The Associated Press reports renewed Teutonic pressure on Galatz on the Danube with Mackensen’s forces active in southern Moldavia near Fokshani. Russians retreat between Braila and Galatz as La Bureata falls, while Austro-German gains continue on the Moldavian front and Somme fighting persists north of the Ancre. The Russian front heats up with attacks along the Dvina Riga region and south of Dvinsk.
Sergeant Lincoln, after a Christmas Eve altercation with Officer OShaughnessy at Lincoln police station, drew a thirty day suspension. He reportedly attacked OShaughnessy when ordered to return to the sergeant’s room and answer phones. Mayor Pillans reviewed the case and imposed the 30 day penalty.

Harris Sutton, sixteen, convicted of assaulting a ten year old white girl on December 7, was hanged in M'Donough Georgia. He had denied guilt until hours before execution when he confessed.

News from Mobile reports the death at Nogaltes Arizona of Felix Walker aged 32 Mobile boy with the Alabama National Guard at the border. Walker died of pneumonia the first Mobile boy to die in the current epidemic though several Alabama boys have fallen ill in recent weeks. He is the son of W H Walker of 251 Springhill Avenue an employee of Metropolitan Insurance Company. The telegram announcing the death was received by the family this morning. Walker's body will be brought home for interment.
Captain Leon Schwarz of the First Alabama Infantry returns from leave in Mobile to rejoin his regiment in Arizona. Acting on telegraphic orders from Nogales, Schwarz will join Governor Henderson tonight to serve as an aide on the campaign, with travel aboard a pier ride to the camp.
Washington Democrats abandon plans to close the inquiry into a stock market leak tied to a Wilson peace note. The Wood resolution is recommitted to the rules committee for further action with debate centering on broadened powers to compel testimony. Chairman Henry asserts no evidence supports the charges.
