Eight lives were lost when the river packet Kanawha sank near Dam No. 19 in the Ohio River. Captain Brady M. Berry and 62 survivors arrived at Parkersburg as rescue teams searched four miles of riverfront. The vessel carried 36 passengers and 48 crew. total loss estimated at $30,000.
